Description
This elegant 2004 Château Haut-Batailley, 5ème Grand Cru Classé from Pauillac, comes from one of the Médoc’s most reliable and classically styled estates. The 2004 vintage produced wines of freshness and balance, with Haut-Batailley offering a refined, approachable Pauillac that has developed beautifully with nearly two decades of ageing.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby with slight garnet hues, the 2004 Haut-Batailley reveals a bouquet of cassis, black cherry, cedar, and tobacco leaf, complemented by subtle earthy notes and pencil shavings typical of Pauillac. On the palate, it shows medium body with fine tannins, bright acidity, and flavours of blackcurrant, dried herbs, and spice. The finish is elegant and persistent, showcasing the estate’s hallmark finesse. This vintage is drinking perfectly now but will hold well for several more years.
Serving and Food Pairing
Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after 30–60 minutes of decanting. A perfect partner to roast lamb with rosemary, grilled ribeye steak, or venison. For a vegetarian option, pair with wild mushroom dishes or aged cheeses such as Gruyère and Tomme de Savoie.
Winemaking
Château Haut-Batailley follows traditional Pauillac methods. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in temperature-controlled vats, and matured in French oak barrels, with a proportion of new oak used to add depth and spice. The final blend, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc, is crafted to express both structure and elegance.
Château Haut-Batailley is owned by the Cazes family (of Château Lynch-Bages fame) and has long been admired for producing classical Pauillac wines that are accessible yet age-worthy. Its gravel-rich vineyards, located on the prestigious Bages plateau, contribute to the pure, refined Cabernet character in its wines.
How to store your Wine
Store bottles lying down in a dark, cool cellar at 10–14°C with steady humidity. Proper cellaring will allow the wine to continue developing gracefully over the next 5–8 years.
