Description
1966 Château Palmer is a beautifully mature Margaux from one of the classic post-war Bordeaux vintages. Nearly six decades on, it has evolved into a wine of striking finesse and nuance, where Palmer’s trademark perfume, silky texture and understated power come through with remarkable grace.
In the glass, it shows a pale brick-garnet colour with a broad, amber-tinged rim. The bouquet is haunting and complex: dried raspberry and redcurrant, cedar and cigar box, intertwined with notes of rose petal, violets, leather and forest floor. Subtle hints of truffle, dried herbs and sweet spice emerge with time in the glass, giving a layered and constantly shifting aroma profile.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied, silken and fully resolved. Fine, feather-light tannins carry flavours of dried cherry, soft cassis, tobacco leaf and gentle earthy tones, with a refined, almost Burgundian touch of sous-bois and spice. Acidity is delicate but still present, keeping the wine balanced and fresh enough to avoid fragility. The finish is long, graceful and savoury, lingering with cedar, dried flowers and fading red fruit.
This is a wine for quiet reflection rather than power, best suited to those who cherish the elegance of fully mature claret. Serve at cellar temperature after a very careful decant to remove sediment, and enjoy it alongside simple, refined dishes that will not overpower its delicacy. A rare chance to experience classic Margaux from 1966—ethereal, complex and deeply evocative.
