Description
The 1995 vintage of Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande is a superb example of the estate's trademark elegance and refinement. Often described as the most graceful of the Pauillac Second Growths, the Comtesse’s 1995 offering balances the structured power of the vintage with its signature silky texture and feminine charm. The wine was crafted from a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with supporting roles played by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
After nearly three decades in bottle, the wine displays an enchanting nose of blackcurrant, cassis, violets, and cigar box, laced with hints of cedar, leather, and dried flowers. Secondary aromas of truffle, pencil lead, and crushed herbs emerge with time in the glass, offering a layered and aromatic complexity that rewards slow appreciation.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with finely integrated tannins and a persistent core of dark fruit—black cherry, mulberry, and currant—lifted by fresh acidity. The mouthfeel is polished and seamless, reflecting the estate’s precise élevage and the influence of then-director May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, under whose leadership Pichon Comtesse solidified its reputation as a benchmark for graceful Pauillac. The finish is long and nuanced, showing a gentle grip and flavours of dried tobacco, mocha, and graphite.
This 1995 vintage has reached its plateau and is drinking at peak, offering a harmonious balance of maturity and vitality. A light decant is advised to coax out its full aromatic range. Ideal pairings include roasted duck, aged beef, or wild mushroom risotto—dishes that match its elegance without overwhelming its subtlety.
