The 1976 vintage in the Southern Rhône delivered wines of classic structure and understated ripeness, shaped by warm, Mediterranean conditions tempered by the region’s unique terroir of galets roulés and sandy soils. In this era, producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape favoured a traditional approach, allowing their Grenache-based blends to age patiently in large foudre and to develop slowly in bottle. Le Caveaux Rhodanieus, a name associated with the region’s cellar-based bottlings of the period, represents that steady, understated school of Rhôdanien winemaking, where finesse and harmony were prized over showy fruit.

Tasting Notes:
Now a deep brick-red core with tawny hues at the rim, the bouquet is evolved and complex. Aromas of dried red and black fruits — plum, cranberry and fig — are joined by tertiary notes of leather, garrigue, dried herbs and a hint of smoked earth. With time in the glass, nuances of spice, old cedar and gentle tobacco emerge. On the palate it is medium to full, with softened, integrated tannins and a savoury profile. Flavours of dried dark cherry, licorice and subtle Provençal herb accent gently unfurl, leading to a long, elegant finish that reflects both maturity and regional character.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Stand the bottle upright well ahead of serving to allow sediment to settle, then decant with care. Serve at slightly below ambient room temperature in generous glasses to fully appreciate the aromatic complexity. Excellent with herb-crusted lamb, slow-braised beef, duck confit or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Tomme de Savoie.
