Description
Croft, 1977 Vintage Port
Vintage & Background
The 1977 vintage ranks among the greatest Port vintages of the 20th century, producing wines of exceptional depth, structure, and longevity. Croft, one of the oldest and most historic Port houses (est. 1588), crafted a particularly elegant and expressive wine in this year, known for its rich fruit, balance, and graceful evolution over time. Now with nearly five decades of age, it offers a rare chance to experience a fully mature classic from this legendary vintage.
Appearance & Nose
Brick-garnet in colour with a gently fading rim, the wine shows its maturity beautifully. The bouquet is expansive and complex, revealing layers of dried cherry, fig, and plum alongside cedarwood, spice box, and tobacco. Notes of rose petal, caramel, and polished mahogany emerge with air, adding depth and nuance.
Palate & Texture
Silky and harmonious on the palate, this mature Croft combines sweet, evolved red and black fruit with layers of walnut, dark chocolate, and warm spice. The tannins are fully resolved yet still provide structure, while balanced acidity gives freshness and lift. The finish is long, elegant, and finely textured, lingering with flavours of dried fruit and subtle mocha.
Serving & Cellaring
Decant gently to remove sediment and allow 2–3 hours of breathing time before serving. Fully mature now but will hold beautifully for another decade or more.
