Light medium orange amber color with yellow to clear meniscus and light orange lights; nice, nut oil, melted butter, lightly floral, toasted almond, rich toffee nose; sweet, tasty, youthful but poised and complex, toasty, almond, rich lemon, tart orange palate with depth and a very long finish.

Smells more savoury than the Boal 1984 even though it is sweeter. Nutty, bitter-caramel aroma, earthy. The most harmonious of all the D'Oliveiras wines tasted in this group. As powerful as the others but less strident. Gorgeous dried-apricot fruit intensity. Julia Harding MW

The 1989 Malvasia needs coaxing to eke out the aromas, but they soon muster courage and offer attractive scents of melted candle wax, quince, walnut oil and tangy marmalade. The palate is well-balanced with very crisp acidity that cuts through this Madeira with ease. There are delightful hazelnut and dried honey notes towards the finish, which shows more composure than the 1990 Malvasia. This is well-worth seeking out.
