Description
The Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 1976 La Castella Rossello is a rare historic red wine from the Langhe region in Piedmont, Italy. Produced from Dolcetto grapes, it reflects the traditional style of Dolcetto wines from the 1970s: early-drinking in origin, but capable of interesting evolution when well preserved in bottle over decades.
Tasting notes:
The 1976 vintage is now fully mature and tertiary in profile. The nose reveals aromas of dried black cherry, plum skin, cocoa, leather, tobacco leaf, and forest floor. With aeration, further nuances of dried herbs, earth, and subtle spice may emerge.
On the palate it is soft, round, and evolved, with low tannic impact and gently integrated acidity. The fruit has shifted into savory, dried-fruit, and lightly bitter-chocolate tones, supported by earthy and herbal complexity. The finish is moderate, smooth, and delicately rustic, typical of aged Dolcetto wines from this period.
Serving & food pairing:
Best served at 16–18°C, with gentle handling and minimal decanting.
It pairs well with:
Roasted meats
Pork dishes and sausages
Mushroom-based recipes
Semi-aged cheeses
Traditional Piedmontese cuisine
Producer:
La Castella Rossello is associated with traditional Piedmontese wine production, where Dolcetto was historically crafted as a regional everyday wine, often showing a rustic and authentic expression of the Langhe terroir, with limited but noteworthy aging examples from well-preserved vintages.
