Dow's 1966 Vintage Port – Tasting Note
Dow’s 1966 Vintage Port is a magnificent example of mature Vintage Port, combining the power and structure for which the house is renowned with the elegance that only decades of bottle ageing can provide. Produced from one of the Douro’s most respected declared vintages of the 1960s, this wine has developed extraordinary complexity while retaining remarkable freshness and balance. It is a Port that perfectly demonstrates why Vintage Port remains one of the world's greatest age-worthy wines.
Founded in 1798, Dow’s has built a reputation for producing Vintage Ports of exceptional character and longevity. Drawing fruit from its renowned Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira estates, the house style is distinguished by its firm structure, concentrated fruit and a drier finish than many of its competitors. This hallmark dryness gives Dow’s Ports a unique elegance and precision, allowing them to age beautifully over many decades and making them highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
In the glass, the Port displays a deep tawny-garnet colour with amber highlights at the rim. The bouquet is wonderfully expressive, opening with aromas of dried figs, dates, raisins and black cherry preserves, layered with notes of cedarwood, cigar box and polished antique furniture. As the wine evolves in the glass, further nuances of orange peel, walnut, dark chocolate and sweet baking spices emerge, creating an inviting and wonderfully complex aromatic profile.
The palate is rich, silky and beautifully integrated. Flavours of stewed black fruits, cocoa, roasted nuts and Christmas cake are supported by vibrant acidity and finely resolved tannins. True to the Dow’s style, the sweetness is restrained and balanced, allowing the wine's maturity and complexity to take centre stage. Additional notes of coffee bean, leather and nutmeg appear on the long, evolving mid-palate, adding further depth and sophistication.
The finish is exceptionally long and refined, lingering with notes of dried fruit, spice, dark chocolate and toasted nuts. Dow’s 1966 Vintage Port is drinking magnificently today and is best served slightly below room temperature at 16–18°C. Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine time to open before serving. It pairs beautifully with mature blue cheeses such as Stilton, walnuts, dark chocolate desserts, dried fruits and hard aged cheeses. Equally, it can be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine, where its extraordinary depth and character can be fully appreciated.
