Description

The 1985 Dow’s Vintage Port, offered here in half-bottle format, is a structured and age-worthy expression from one of the most traditionally styled houses in the Douro. The 1985 vintage was widely declared and is considered one of the finest of the decade, producing Ports with firm tannins, deep fruit, and long-term potential. Dow, known for its dry, muscular style, produced a wine in 1985 that is both powerful and classically poised.

Now approaching 40 years of age, the wine has entered an ideal stage of maturity, especially in half-bottle where development is slightly accelerated. The nose is elegant and savoury, offering aromas of dried blackberry, figs, spice cake, and roasted nuts, alongside earthy undertones of tobacco, leather, and forest floor. There is a noble restraint and complexity typical of mature Dow.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a firm structure, layered with notes of black plum, date, cocoa, and warm spice. The tannins have softened beautifully, and the acidity remains fresh, giving the wine a sense of clarity and lift. The finish is long, slightly drier than many peers, and marked by notes of walnut, clove, and dark cherry liqueur—offering elegance over opulence.

Half-bottles of 1985 Dow are ideal for those seeking a mature Vintage Port without opening a full bottle. Best enjoyed now through the late 2020s. Decant gently to avoid sediment, and serve with mature cheeses, spiced nuts, or dark chocolate.
