Description

Dow’s, 2017 Vintage Port

The 2017 vintage stands among the most remarkable Port declarations of recent decades. Following a dry winter and an exceptionally hot summer in the Douro Valley, the harvest arrived earlier than usual, producing small, intensely concentrated grapes. Despite the heat, the finest vineyards retained excellent freshness, resulting in wines of great power, purity and balance.

Dow’s 2017 Vintage Port is a superb expression of the house’s distinctive style — structured, elegant and slightly drier than many of its counterparts. The nose reveals deep aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and dark plum, complemented by hints of violet, cocoa and subtle spice. On the palate it is full-bodied and muscular, with concentrated dark fruit framed by firm tannins and lively acidity that give the wine remarkable precision and ageing potential.

Still youthful and tightly structured, this Vintage Port will benefit from long cellaring and is expected to evolve beautifully for many decades. If opened young, it should be carefully decanted several hours before serving. A wonderful bottle for marking a 2017 birthday or anniversary, and a classic partner to blue cheeses, dark chocolate desserts or simply enjoyed slowly at the end of a special meal.

Reviews

*** 18.5/20 - Richard Mayson ***
Based on Quinta do Bomfim in the Cima Corgo and Quinta Senhora da Ribeira in the Douro Superior, both predominantly south facing with Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca making up 80% of the blend: opaque, closed in but powerfully ripe fruit underlying, seemingly quite introverted compared to some wines at this stage: full, rich and opulent on the palate, this also shows the latent power of the vintage, made as it is in a slightly drier style (3.4 Baumé), lovely minty fruit and full, ripe tannins all the way through the finish. Very fine. 18.5 +? Richardmayson.com

*** 98/100 - James Suckling ***
Pure grape aromas that remind me of fermenting must but then goes to stems and dried flowers. Full-bodied, medium sweet with fine-grained tannins that coat your palate. Powerful and muscular yet remains agile and beautiful. Grows on your palate. Wonderful ripe fruit in the middle palate. Try after 2030.

*** 98/100 - Vinous - Neil Martin ***
The 2017 Dow’s Vintage Port showed a slight reduction and required more time to really open in the glass. Typical of Dow’s it has a more backward and introspective bouquet compared to its peers, scents of blackberry, clove, wild mint, cassis and vanilla, gradually gaining more intensity with aeration. The palate is simply glorious. It is built around a compelling tannic frame that seems finer than any Dow’s I have encountered apart from the ethereal 2011. There is so much energy coiled up in this Port, a sense of symmetry that is enthralling and yet you just know that it needs to be cellared for 15-20 years for it to reveal its full potential. For serious Port-lovers. One of the vintages most cerebral offerings. Total production is 5,250 cases.
