Fonseca, 2003
Vintage Port
Summary
Fonseca 2003 Vintage Port is an outstanding wine from one of the most celebrated declared vintages of the modern era. Fonseca is renowned for producing powerful yet opulent Vintage Ports, and the 2003 perfectly reflects the house style—rich, intensely fruity and beautifully structured for long ageing.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, almost opaque purple-black colour, signalling its remarkable concentration. The nose is rich and expressive, bursting with aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis and dark plum, layered with notes of violets, liquorice, dark chocolate and exotic spice.
On the palate it is full-bodied and lush, with dense flavours of black fruits, black cherry and cocoa supported by firm but ripe tannins. Despite its power, the wine retains balance and freshness, leading to a long, velvety finish marked by lingering dark fruit and spice.
Vintage Overview
The 2003 growing season in the Douro was characterised by an exceptionally hot summer, producing grapes of outstanding ripeness and concentration. The vintage was widely declared by the major Port houses and is regarded as one of the finest of the early 21st century. Fonseca’s wines from this year are particularly admired for their richness, depth and longevity.
Serving Suggestions
Serve at 16–18°C and decant for several hours before serving to allow the wine to open fully and to remove natural sediment. It pairs beautifully with blue cheeses such as Stilton, rich chocolate desserts, or strong aged cheeses.
Cellaring
Still youthful and structured, Fonseca 2003 Vintage Port will continue to evolve for decades. Properly stored bottles can comfortably cellar until 2050 and beyond.
