Description
1971 Freisa – Contratto (Piedmont)
The 1971 vintage is considered one of the classic post-war years in Piedmont, producing wines with structure and longevity. Freisa, one of the region’s traditional indigenous varieties and closely related to Nebbiolo, is known for its vibrant acidity and firm structure in youth. This bottling from Contratto — founded in 1867 and recognised for its traditional approach to winemaking — reflects a historic era of regional production shaped by patience and extended ageing.
Tasting Notes:
Now showing a mature brick-garnet hue with amber tones at the rim, the nose is savoury and finely evolved. Aromas of dried red cherry, cranberry and rose petal are layered with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With time in the glass, subtle hints of dried herbs and gentle spice emerge. On the palate it is medium-bodied and harmonious, with softened tannins and the lively acidity typical of Freisa that preserves freshness. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and delicate balsamic nuances unfold gradually, leading to a smooth, elegant and gently persistent finish.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A fine partner to braised meats, game dishes, mushroom risotto or mature hard cheeses.
Summary:
A rare and characterful example of mature Freisa from a classic Piedmont vintage, offering savoury complexity and traditional regional character. A fascinating bottle for collectors and enthusiasts of historic Italian varietals.
