Description

The Gattinara DOC 1966 Conti Ermano Maggiora is a rare and historically significant Nebbiolo wine from Alto Piemonte, Italy. Coming from the volcanic soils of Gattinara, this bottle represents a classic mid-20th-century expression of northern Piedmontese winemaking, where structure, acidity, and longevity were more prominent than fruit concentration.

After nearly sixty years of ageing, it stands as a fully mature and tertiary example of traditional Gattinara.

Tasting Notes:

The 1966 vintage is deeply evolved and delicate. The nose shows classic aged Nebbiolo aromas of dried rose petals, sour cherry, leather, tobacco, forest floor, dried herbs, truffle, and earthy mineral notes. With time in the glass, subtle hints of balsamic, tea leaf, and old cedarwood may appear.

On the palate it is elegant, linear, and highly refined, with softened tannins and still-vibrant but integrated acidity. Compared to Barolo and Barbaresco, Gattinara from this era tends to be more austere and mineral-driven, with a lighter but very persistent structure. The fruit has fully evolved into dried red berry and savory earthy tones, leading to a long, subtle, and contemplative finish.

Serving & Food Pairing:

Best served at 18°C. Due to its age, the bottle should be handled with extreme care and gently poured to avoid disturbing sediment.

It pairs well with:

braised meats
game dishes
mushroom risotto
truffle-based dishes
aged hard cheeses

Producer:

Antoniolo is one of the most important historic producers in Alto Piemonte, although Conti Ermano Maggiora is associated with traditional Gattinara production from the same region and era. Wines from this period reflect the volcanic terroir of Gattinara, known for producing some of the most age-worthy and mineral-driven Nebbiolo expressions in Italy.
