Description
This rare 1986 Gigondas from Domaine du Cayron, crafted by Michel Faraud, is a fine example of old-vine Southern Rhône winemaking. Domaine du Cayron, a historic family estate, is renowned for producing traditional, age-worthy Gigondas wines from Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre grown on limestone and clay soils at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail.
Tasting Notes
Brick-garnet in colour with a tawny rim, this 1986 Gigondas opens with evolved aromas of dried red berries, leather, garrigue herbs, and cedar, alongside earthy notes of truffle and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied, showing resolved tannins and flavours of dried cherry, spice, and savoury game. A gentle, tertiary finish lingers with notes of forest floor and dried flowers. Now a wine of subtlety and complexity, offering the charm of mature Rhône terroir.
Serving and Food Pairing
Serve at 16–18°C, ideally without prolonged decanting to preserve its delicate aromatics. Best enjoyed with slow-cooked lamb, game dishes, or duck confit. For a vegetarian pairing, try lentil and mushroom stew or roasted root vegetables with herbs. Mature cheeses such as aged Gouda or Tomme de Savoie also complement its earthy complexity.
Winemaking
The Faraud family has always worked in a traditional style: hand-harvested grapes, natural fermentations in cement vats, and ageing in large old foudres. The 1986 vintage, while structured, produced wines with notable ageing potential, and Domaine du Cayron’s old vines allowed for concentration and authenticity that continues to shine nearly four decades later.
Domaine du Cayron, run by the Faraud family since 1840, is one of the benchmark producers of Gigondas. Known for their artisanal approach and unwavering focus on tradition, the estate has built a reputation for producing soulful, age-worthy Rhône wines that reflect both terroir and family heritage.
How to store your Wine
Store lying down in a dark, cool cellar (10–14°C). This 1986 is fully mature and best enjoyed now, though carefully stored bottles may continue to show interest for another 1–2 years.
