Description
This traditional 1986 Gigondas from Domaine les Goubert showcases the estate’s long-standing reputation for producing robust yet elegant Southern Rhône reds. Situated at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, Domaine les Goubert cultivates Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault on stony limestone-clay soils, crafting wines of both power and authenticity.
Tasting Notes
Brick-red with a fading rim, this mature Gigondas reveals complex aromas of dried cherry, plum, and blackcurrant, mingling with leather, spice, and earthy garrigue herbs. On the palate, the tannins have softened with age, giving way to savoury notes of tobacco, truffle, and dried fig. Medium-bodied and balanced, it finishes with lingering notes of spice and forest floor. A fascinating expression of fully evolved Rhône character.
Serving and Food Pairing
Serve at 16–18°C. Decant gently to remove any sediment, but avoid prolonged exposure as the wine is delicate at this stage. Excellent with braised lamb shanks, game stews, or duck with herbs. Vegetarian pairings include mushroom ragout, lentil casserole, or roasted aubergines with Provençal herbs. Pairs well with aged cheeses such as Cantal or Ossau-Iraty.
Winemaking
The 1986 vintage was classic in the Rhône, producing structured wines with good backbone. Domaine les Goubert followed traditional methods: hand-harvesting, fermentation in concrete tanks, and maturation in large old oak foudres, which preserved the purity of fruit while allowing for long ageing. Nearly four decades later, the result is a wine of depth and history.
Domaine les Goubert is a family-run estate with a heritage of producing authentic Rhône wines. Known for a range that includes both everyday wines and more structured cuvées, the domaine has always focused on traditional vineyard practices and restrained cellar work, allowing the terroir of Gigondas to shine through.
How to store your Wine
