The first ever 50 Year Old Tinta Negra is absolutely stunning! This is the 1st time Tinta Negra has ever been seen this way and with ONLY 2,700 (50cl) bottles produced for the entire world market, it looks a pretty amazing offering
2015 saw Tinta Negra promoted to the status of ‘recommended grape’ and thus is now allowed to be mentioned on labels. In addition, a new 50 Year-Old category has been implemented; this is designed to bridge the gap between 15/20 Year-Old Colheitas and much older single-year Madeiras, and offers drinkers the opportunity to buy some properly old cask-aged Madeiras at prices considerably below those of the older vintage bottlings.
The 50 year old Tinta Negra displays distinct tertiary characteristics due to the extended maturation in very old American Oak casks. The result is a wonderfully expressive wine with lovely balance, good acidity and excellent concentration - a brilliant and fascinating example of the Tinta Negra varietal. Deliciously sweet and beautifully balanced with a refreshing acidity, this Tinta Negra shows great concentration due to the amount of time it has spent in casks. Flavours of candied fruits, black monukka raisins, toffee and molasses.
‘I thought it was very good indeed. My note: mid-deep amber / mahogany; attractive, lifted aromas, leafy and showing considerable age and concentration; rich, orange marmalade tang, very sweet in style but offset by a lovely streak of acidity, great poise on the finish.’ Richard Mayson
“A deep toffee apple hue belies a lively, lifted nose and palate rife with sweet herbal/pot pourri and deeper, delicious cafe crème and bourbon vanilla riffs. In the mouth it’s very well focused; punchy acidity lends great vitality – lift, line and length – to its medium dry palate of black Cardamon and tamarind spiked chutneyed apple and citrus fruit. Spice and tobacco notes linger. Thoroughly delicious and surprisingly zingy and youthful.”
Sarah Ahmed, Wine Detective
“Toasted almonds, spices, plum compote, incense, figs and honey. In the mouth it impresses by its liveliness, volume, freshness with an intense acidity which gives it a lingering finish.”
Rui Falcão on awarding TN 50YO Wine of the Year 2015
“Delicious grippy iodine and pepper; rich yet elegant with lovely Christmas cake notes but always with the spice of citrus acidity. Savoury, long and lingering.”
