Description
Hine Grande Champagne Cognac, 1929
Believed imported to England in cask by Joseph Travers & Co
The 1929 vintage in Cognac is widely regarded as one of the great pre-war years, producing eaux-de-vie of remarkable structure, concentration and longevity. From the prestigious Grande Champagne cru — the heartland of the region and source of its finest, longest-lived Cognacs — this example from Hine reflects both exceptional terroir and the traditional, slow maturation that defines truly historic spirit.
Founded in 1763, Hine is one of the few Cognac houses with deep Anglo-French heritage, long associated with exporting fine Cognac to the British market. The belief that this 1929 was imported to England in cask by Joseph Travers & Co adds an intriguing historical dimension, suggesting extended maturation under British cellaring conditions — a practice once common and often prized for its distinctive character.
Tasting Notes:
Now a deep mahogany amber with copper highlights, the nose is profoundly complex and fully mature. Aromas of polished walnut, old oak, dried fig and raisin are layered with notes of cigar box, antique furniture, dark toffee and subtle rancio. With time in the glass, hints of orange peel, cocoa, leather and warming spice emerge. On the palate it is rich yet beautifully composed, with silky texture and remarkable persistence. Flavours of dried fruits, caramelised nuts and gentle tobacco unfold slowly, leading to a long, warming and contemplative finish of exceptional depth.
Serving & Enjoyment:
Best served neat in a tulip glass at room temperature. Allow time for the spirit to open and reveal its full aromatic range. A Cognac of this age is best savoured slowly — ideally after dinner, perhaps alongside dark chocolate or a fine cigar.
Summary:
An extraordinary pre-war Grande Champagne Cognac from one of the region’s most historic houses, the 1929 Hine represents both heritage and endurance — a rare and evocative spirit from a legendary vintage.very elegant and well balanced.
