    Vintage & Background
The 1966 Moscatel de Setúbal Superior is a rare fortified wine from José Maria da Fonseca, the historic and benchmark producer of the Setúbal Peninsula. Made primarily from Moscatel grapes and fortified with grape spirit, it retains natural sweetness and reaches around 18 % alcohol. The “Superior” designation denotes a higher-quality selection, typically aged longer in cask and released in limited quantities.

    Appearance & Nose
Deep amber to golden in colour, reflecting decades of oxidative ageing. The nose is expressive and warm, with classic muscat aromatics layered with caramelised fruit, honey, raisin, and subtle nutty notes. Oxidative nuances add depth, giving an impression reminiscent of aged Madeira or old tawny-style fortified wines.

    Palate & Texture
The palate is concentrated and richly sweet, yet balanced by natural acidity. Flavours of dried apricot, orange peel, honey, and toffee unfold gradually, supported by a silky, mouth-coating texture. The wine carries impressive length, with sweetness lingering alongside savoury, oxidative complexity.

    Maturity & Drinking Window
Fully mature and drinking at peak, the 1966 Moscatel de Setúbal Superior offers the depth and nuance that only extended ageing can provide. Well-stored bottles should remain stable and expressive for years, though it is best enjoyed now to appreciate its evolved character.

    Serving & Pairing Suggestions
Serve slightly chilled at 12–16 °C in a small dessert wine glass. Decant carefully if sediment is present. Pair with blue cheeses, aged hard cheeses, nut-based desserts, or rich caramel and dried-fruit puddings. Equally rewarding on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine.
