Description
1970 Kopke Quinta de São Luiz Vintage Port
Producer:
Founded in 1638, Kopke is the oldest Port house and has a long tradition of crafting wines of elegance and longevity. The Quinta de São Luiz estate in the Douro Valley provides some of the house’s finest fruit, with old vines rooted on steep schist terraces overlooking the river. It is here that Kopke produces its most characterful Vintage Ports.
Vintage:
1970 is recognised as one of the great classic Port vintages of the 20th century, producing wines of exceptional structure, concentration, and ageing potential. Well-cellared examples remain vibrant today, showing both mature complexity and enduring freshness.
Tasting Note:
Now fully mature, the wine displays a deep tawny-ruby core with a fading rim. The bouquet is complex and evolved, with notes of dried figs, dates, leather, tobacco, walnut and hints of spice and dark chocolate. On the palate it is silky and harmonious, with layers of dried fruits, cedar, roasted nuts and a touch of mocha. The tannins have softened gracefully, leaving a long, elegant finish with lingering sweetness and spice.
Serving & Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment before serving. Best enjoyed at 16–18ºC with blue cheese, mature cheddar, roasted nuts or rich desserts such as chocolate torte. A contemplative wine, also excellent on its own at the end of a meal.
Storage:
Bottled Vintage Port should be stored lying down in a cool, dark place with constant temperature. Once opened, consume within 48 hours for best enjoyment.
