Description
Vintage & Background
1961 was not a widely declared vintage in the Douro, but some houses produced outstanding Ports with longevity and elegance. Krohn, a producer long respected for both Colheitas and classic Vintage Ports, crafted a wine that has stood the test of time. This bottling, released directly from Krohn’s own cellars as a library release, offers impeccable provenance and a rare opportunity to experience a perfectly matured 1961 Port.
Appearance & Nose
The colour has evolved into deep tawny at the rim with a garnet core, showing its six decades of age. On the nose, aromas of figs, dates, and raisins emerge first, followed by notes of walnuts, cedar, dried rose petals, tobacco, and subtle spice. A faint balsamic lift and echoes of dark chocolate add complexity, while the wine retains a gentle sweetness.
Palate & Texture
On the palate the Krohn 1961 is graceful yet concentrated. Flavours of dried fruits—fig, prune, and raisin—are layered with roasted nuts, caramel, and warm spice. The texture is velvety and smooth, with the sweetness balanced by Dow’s hallmark of slightly firmer structure and freshness. Tannins are fully integrated, acidity still gives lift, and the finish lingers with nutty, chocolatey richness.
Maturity & Drinking Window
This Port is fully mature and drinking beautifully now, with all elements in harmony. Thanks to its library release provenance, the wine retains freshness and balance rarely found in bottles of this age. While it may hold for a few more years, it is at its peak and should be enjoyed soon to capture the finesse of its evolved fruit and spice.
Food Pairing & Serving Suggestions
Serve lightly cool (around 15–16 °C) and decant carefully to remove sediment. Pair with blue cheeses, roasted nuts, rich chocolate desserts, or enjoy it as a meditative glass on its own.
Overall Impression & Verdict
Krohn 1961 Vintage Port is a beautifully mature wine that exemplifies the elegance of the vintage and the house’s traditional style. With dried fruit richness, spice, and nutty depth wrapped in a silky texture, it offers not just a drink but an experience—made even more special by its release directly from the Krohn cellars.
