  • Description

Maynard’s 2017 Vintage Port is a bold and expressive wine crafted by the Van Zeller family under the Barão de Vilar label. Made from classic Douro grapes—including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, and Tinta Barroca—this vintage showcases the power and structure of an exceptional harvest. After vinification, it was aged for two years in oak before bottling unfiltered, setting the stage for long-term ageing in bottle.

On the nose, the wine offers an intense bouquet of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, plum compote, and hints of dark chocolate and warm spice. The palate is rich and concentrated, with structured tannins that support layers of fresh black fruits, cocoa, and subtle floral notes. Its depth and finesse are underlined by critical acclaim, including 93 points on Wine-Searcher and 95 points from Wine Enthusiast.

This is a Vintage Port built for cellaring, with a recommended drinking window from 2028 to 2045. Decanting is advised to separate natural sediment and allow the wine’s complexity to unfold. Best served at 15–18 °C, it pairs beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, spiced fruit tarts, or mature cheeses—making it a standout choice for both collectors and celebratory occasions.

Critic tasting note: "This ripe, floral wine is also dark with tannins. Its solid character gives weight as well as density, adding spice and blackberry fruit flavors. The wine's potential is considerable. Drink from 2030. Roger Voss" - 95/100, Wine Enthusiast
