1966 Messias – Quinta do Cachão Vintage Port

The 1966 vintage in the Douro was marked by classic conditions — a balanced growing season that allowed for full physiological ripeness without excessive heat. In the mid-20th century, producers like Messias focussed on traditional, patiently crafted Ports, favouring extended cask ageing and careful bottle evolution. Quinta do Cachão, perched on steep schist terraces in the Cima Corgo, has long been respected for its well-structured, expressive Ports, and this 1966 Vintage is a distinguished example of that era’s style: balanced, quietly powerful and beautifully aged.

Tasting Notes:
Now a deep amber-ruby with tawny reflections at the rim, the bouquet is richly evolved and multilayered. Aromas of dried fig, marmalade, orange peel and raisin are carried on a backdrop of cedar, tobacco leaf and old leather. With gentle swirling, nuances of toasted almond, honeyed spice and subtle balsamic emerge. On the palate it is refined and harmonious, with generous acidity supporting mature flavours of dried dark fruits, citrus peel, toffee and delicate nutty complexity. The finish is long, warm and contemplative, revealing the hallmark of extended maturation in old oak.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Serve slightly chilled in large wine glasses to allow the full aromatic spectrum to unfurl. No decanting is necessary, though a gentle pour to separate any very fine sediment may be considered. A superb companion to crème brûlée, almond tart, blue-veined cheeses or simply enjoyed on its own as a contemplative finish to a memorable dinner.
