Description

1961 Nebbiolo – Vino Pazzo (Ce.Di.Vi)

The 1961 vintage is regarded as one of the great classic years of post-war Piedmont, producing wines of depth, structure and remarkable longevity. This Vino Pazzo (Ce.Di.Vi) appears to represent a traditional Nebbiolo-based Chinato style, reflecting an era when aromatised wines were crafted with herbal infusions, quinine and extended ageing to create complex digestif wines of character and intrigue.

Tasting Notes:
Now showing a deep tawny-garnet colour with amber and mahogany reflections, the nose is immediately expressive and evocative. Aromas of macerated cherry, dried orange peel and rose petal intertwine with quinine bark, alpine herbs, clove and sweet spice. Layers of tobacco leaf, menthol, old apothecary cabinet and balsamic undertones emerge with air, giving the wine a distinctly oxidative and contemplative personality. On the palate it is rich, sweet-bitter and silky in texture, balanced by vibrant herbal lift and persistent spice. Flavours of caramelised red fruits, bitter herbs, dark honey, cinnamon and medicinal botanicals carry through to a long, warming and complex finish.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Best served slightly cool in small glasses as a digestif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Also excellent alongside dark chocolate, walnut desserts, blue cheeses or mature hard cheeses. Can equally be enjoyed in classic aperitif-style serves with soda, tonic or citrus peel.

Summary:
A rare and fascinating example of mature Nebbiolo Chinato from a celebrated Piedmont vintage, offering the exotic herbal complexity, sweet-bitter balance and oxidative depth that define traditional aromatised Italian wines. An evocative and highly individual bottle for collectors and lovers of historic aperitif styles.
