Description

1961 Chianti – Frescobaldi Nipozzano

The 1961 vintage is regarded as one of the classic post-war years in Italy, producing wines of structure and longevity. From the historic Frescobaldi estate, Castello di Nipozzano in the Rufina zone of Chianti, this bottle reflects a period when traditional Tuscan winemaking emphasised balance, acidity and patient ageing. The Frescobaldi family, whose winemaking history dates back over 700 years, has long been synonymous with quality in Tuscany.

Tasting Notes:
Now deep brick in colour with tawny highlights at the rim, the nose is beautifully mature and complex. Aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and plum mingle with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and earthy undergrowth. With time in the glass, hints of balsamic herb, cedarwood and gentle spice emerge. On the palate it is medium-bodied and harmonious, with softened tannins and a lively thread of acidity that preserves freshness. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and subtle balsamic tones unfold gradually, leading to a long, elegant and contemplative finish.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. An excellent partner to slow-cooked meats, wild boar ragù, mushroom dishes or mature Pecorino.

Summary:
A rare and characterful Chianti from a celebrated vintage and one of Tuscany’s most historic estates. The 1961 Frescobaldi Nipozzano offers mature complexity, savoury nuance and the graceful structure that define well-aged Sangiovese.
