Description

The Nebbiolo 1976 Angelo Gaja “I Faggiani d’Oro” is a rare historic red wine from the Langhe region in Piedmont, Italy. Produced by Angelo Gaja, it is made from Nebbiolo grapes and reflects the estate’s traditional production phase in the 1970s, before its full transition to the more modern and internationally recognized style of later decades.

Tasting notes:

The 1976 vintage is now fully mature and deeply tertiary. The nose opens with aromas of dried rose petals, sour cherry, dried plum, leather, tobacco leaf, forest floor, and truffle-like earthy notes. With aeration, further complexity develops, including dried herbs, spice, cedarwood, and balsamic nuances.

On the palate it is evolved, elegant, and harmonious, with tannins now fully softened and integrated. The natural acidity of Nebbiolo still provides structure and lift, while the fruit has transformed into savory, dried-fruit, and earthy expressions. The finish is long, refined, and gently austere, typical of classic aged Nebbiolo from this period.

Serving & food pairing:

Best served at 16–18°C, with very gentle handling and minimal or no decanting.

It pairs well with:

Braised beef
Roasted veal or lamb
Game dishes (wild boar, hare)
Mushroom risotto
Truffle-based dishes
Aged hard cheeses
Producer:

Angelo Gaja is one of the most influential figures in Italian wine, known for transforming the global perception of Barbaresco and Piedmontese wines. During the 1970s, the estate still produced traditional Nebbiolo bottlings alongside its evolving winemaking philosophy, marking a transitional era in its history.
