Palmer White Port 2015 (Douro, Portugal)

A bright, vintage-dated White Port that balances youthful fruit with the first hints of cask-aged complexity. The 2015 shows a clear deep-gold hue and an inviting nose of orange blossom, lemon oil and white peach, layered with acacia honey, vanilla pod and blanched almond. On the palate it’s medium-sweet yet lifted, with lively acidity carrying flavours of candied citrus, ripe pear and apricot, rounded by nougat and gentle baking spice from time in old oak. A discreet saline snap keeps things precise, leading to a long, tapering finish of orange zest, almond cream and a light cedar echo.

Serve well-chilled (10–12 °C) in a white-wine glass. Excellent as an aperitif and superb in a Portonic (1:1 with quality tonic over ice, citrus twist). Pair with salted almonds, prawns with aioli, goat’s cheese tart or smoked trout; for dessert, try lemon tart, almond cake or pastéis de nata. Drinking beautifully now for freshness, with scope to gain nutty depth over the next 5–8 years. Once opened, it keeps well for 3–4 weeks if re-stoppered and refrigerated. Bottled under the Palmer label by Barão de Vilar – Van Zeller, a historic Douro family known for classical, balanced Ports.
