Description
This 1966 Pedra Rubia from Mario Mereu is a rare and mature Sardinian wine, showing the nuanced complexity of over five decades of ageing. The bouquet reveals aromas of dried red cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, and hints of forest floor, balsamic, and gentle spice. On the palate it is medium-bodied, with softened tannins, balanced acidity, and flavours of dried red fruit, earthy herbs, and a subtle savoury undertone. The finish is long, harmonious, and contemplative, reflecting the elegance of a wine aged over fifty years.
Serving Suggestions
Stand the bottle upright for 24–48 hours before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Carefully and slowly decant the wine to separate it from the sediment. The cork may crumble or fragment on opening, which is entirely normal for a wine of this age. Serve gently decanted at around 17 °C (63 °F), allowing 30–40 minutes for the wine to breathe. Pairs beautifully with roasted or braised meats, game, earthy mushroom dishes, and aged cheeses such as Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano.
Note
For wines of this age, the cork may crumble when opening—this is normal and does not affect the quality of the wine. As with many mature wines, individual bottles may show some variation, reflecting their unique ageing journey. The evolved, savoury character of older wines may not appeal to every palate, but for those who appreciate the grace of time, it offers real depth and authenticity.
