Description

The 1960 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is a graceful and distinguished wine from one of the Douro Valley’s most iconic estates. While 1960 was not as broadly declared as 1963 or 1970, Noval—known for its independence and exceptional vineyard holdings—chose to produce a Vintage Port that has stood the test of time with remarkable finesse. Now over 60 years old, this wine exemplifies mature Port at its most refined.

The nose is expressive and beautifully evolved, with lifted aromas of dried cherry, rose petal, fig, and orange peel. Secondary notes of tobacco leaf, antique wood, and sweet spices—cinnamon and clove—emerge with air, underpinned by a gentle nuttiness and a touch of caramel. There is a delicate oxidative nuance that adds complexity without overwhelming the freshness.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a silky texture and subtle persistence. Flavours of stewed red fruit, soft toffee, and toasted almond glide across the palate, supported by bright acidity and a whisper of residual tannin. While not as rich or powerful as Noval’s legendary Nacional bottlings, the 1960 Vintage Port delivers harmony, elegance, and depth, with a long, savoury finish marked by dried fruit and spice.

This Port is fully mature and drinking beautifully, best enjoyed now or within the next few years. A light decant—just enough to remove sediment—is all that’s needed. Serve slightly cool, paired with aged cheeses, nut-based desserts, or simply savoured on its own as a piece of living history in a glass.
