Description
1976 Casa Vinicola S. Osvaldo Refosco (Double Magnum 3.0L)
Overview:
A rare and mature Refosco from historic Friulian producer Casa Vinicola S. Osvaldo, this 1976 double magnum (3.0L) shows the exceptional ageing potential of large-format bottles. Produced from the indigenous Refosco grape, it reflects the traditional style of Friuli: structured in youth, deeply savoury with age, and now fully evolved after nearly five decades in bottle. The magnum format has contributed to a notably slow, graceful development, preserving freshness alongside tertiary complexity.
Appearance:
Deep garnet in colour with brick-orange highlights at the rim, showing slow, even evolution typical of large-format ageing.
Nose:
Complex and fully mature, opening with dried black cherry, plum and stewed dark fruit, layered with cocoa, leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. Further notes of dried herbs, mocha, spice and earthy undertones emerge with air, reflecting long bottle development.
Palate:
Smooth, rounded and fully resolved, with softened tannins and a supple texture. Flavours of dried fruit, dark chocolate and gentle spice sit alongside savoury, earthy and herbal notes. Despite full maturity, the wine retains balance and structure, with the magnum format contributing to its freshness and composure.
Finish:
Long, savoury and harmonious, with lingering notes of dried fruit, cocoa, spice.
Decanting:
Stand upright for 2–3 days prior to opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant slowly and carefully through a fine strainer immediately before serving at 16–18°C. Fragile corks are common with wines of this age; any cork fragments should be removed during decanting.
