Description

1996 Rivesaltes – L’Archiviste

Produced in the historic cellars of Roussillon, the 1996 Rivesaltes “L’Archiviste” is a beautifully aged Vin Doux Naturel, crafted in a traditional oxidative style. Carefully matured over many years, it captures the essence of time, offering both richness and remarkable complexity while retaining a refined sense of balance.

Tasting Notes:
Deep amber with mahogany reflections, the nose is immediately expressive and layered. Aromas of dried fig, orange peel and date intertwine with notes of toasted walnut, coffee, caramel and sweet spice, alongside a distinctive rancio character that speaks to its age. On the palate it is rich, smooth and enveloping, with flavours of toffee, candied citrus, roasted nuts and sultana. A subtle thread of acidity lifts the wine, preventing heaviness and adding freshness to its opulent profile.

Finish:
Long, warming and persistent, with lingering notes of dried fruit, spice and a gentle nuttiness that fades elegantly.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Serve lightly chilled to highlight its aromatic complexity. Excellent with crème brûlée, tarte tatin, blue cheeses or foie gras, and equally compelling as a contemplative after-dinner wine on its own.

Summary:
A deeply expressive and mature Rivesaltes, the 1996 “L’Archiviste” showcases the beauty of extended ageing. Rich yet balanced, with layers of oxidative complexity, it is an exceptional choice for lovers of traditional southern French fortified wines.
