Description
1945 Vecchio Salento Bianco, Ruffino
Puglia, Italy
The 1945 Vecchio Salento Bianco from Ruffino is an extraordinary relic of Italian winemaking history, produced in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. At this time, Ruffino—already a house of great repute in Tuscany—sourced select southern cuvées from trusted growers in Salento, blending traditional craftsmanship with regional character.
In the glass, the wine reveals a deep antique gold hue with luminous amber reflections — a living relic of time. The nose is graceful and complex, offering aromas of dried apricot, orange peel, beeswax, and chamomile tea, gently layered with honeyed almond, lanolin, and a whisper of old oak.
On the palate, it is ethereal yet persistent — a silken weave of preserved lemon, hazelnut, and dried flower, sustained by a fine thread of acidity that still shimmers through the years. Hints of marzipan and spice emerge with air, evoking a quiet sense of nostalgia and craftsmanship long past.
Serving & Pairing:
Serve lightly chilled at 14 °C in a broad glass. This contemplative old white is best enjoyed on its own or alongside aged Comté, roasted almonds, or delicate seafood terrines. Avoid excessive chilling, which would mask its subtle perfume and faded golden warmth.
Drink now. A rare survivor from 1945 — an eloquent echo of Ruffino’s winemaking heritage, capturing the quiet persistence and sunlit grace of Tuscany’s post-war vineyards.
