The 1962 Sandeman Vintage Port is a beautifully aged and elegant wine from a quietly successful vintage. While overshadowed by the more widely declared 1963, 1962 yielded some exceptional single-house releases—of which Sandeman’s stands out for its finesse and graceful maturity. Now over 60 years in bottle, this Port offers a deeply rewarding drinking experience for lovers of aged, traditionally styled Vintage Port.

On the nose, the wine is complex and fully mature, offering aromas of dried cherry, fig, and orange peel, intertwined with antique wood, rose petal, and fine cigar tobacco. Subtle oxidative tones bring in notes of walnut, old leather, and baking spice, delivering a layered and nostalgic bouquet that continues to evolve with time in the glass.

The palate is medium-bodied and silky, with softened tannins and a fine thread of acidity that lifts the aged fruit flavours. Notes of redcurrant, dried plum, toasted almond, and molasses glide across the palate, supported by hints of clove and cocoa. The sweetness is beautifully integrated, and the finish is long and delicate, with lingering notes of spice, caramel, and dried fruits.

This 1962 Sandeman is fully mature and should be enjoyed now, ideally within the next few years. A gentle decant is advised to remove sediment and allow the wine’s aromatics to unfold. Serve slightly below room temperature alongside blue cheeses, nut-based desserts, or as a contemplative after-dinner drink. A rare piece of Port history that speaks softly but with confidence.
