Description

1976 Umberto Fiore Spanna

Overview:
A mature Spanna from historic Piedmontese producer Umberto Fiore, this 1976 vintage is made from the local Nebbiolo clone traditionally known as Spanna. Now approaching five decades of age, it shows the elegant, tertiary expression typical of well-aged Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo, with lifted aromatics and refined savoury complexity.

Appearance:
Deep garnet in colour with brick-orange highlights at the rim, reflecting slow and graceful maturation.

Nose:
Evolved and aromatic, revealing dried red cherry, rose petal and redcurrant, layered with leather, tobacco leaf and gentle spice. Hints of tea leaf and dried citrus peel develop with aeration.

Palate:
Refined and harmonious, with softened tannins and a graceful, linear structure. Flavours of dried cherry, candied red fruit and cranberry are supported by savoury spice, tea leaf and subtle herbal complexity. The wine remains poised and balanced despite full maturity.

Finish:
Long and elegant, with lingering notes of red fruit, rose petal and gentle savoury nuance.

Decanting:
Stand upright for 2–3 days prior to opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant slowly and carefully through a fine strainer immediately before serving at 16–18°C. Fragile corks are common with wines of this age; any cork fragments should be removed during decanting.
