Description
Taylor Fladgate, 2003
Vintage Port
Summary
Taylor Fladgate 2003 Vintage Port is a powerful and highly regarded wine from one of the most celebrated declared vintages of the modern era. Produced by one of the Douro’s most historic Port houses, the wine reflects Taylor’s signature style—structured, intensely concentrated and built for exceptionally long ageing.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, almost opaque purple-black colour, a hallmark of its concentration. The nose is rich and expressive, revealing aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis and dark plum, layered with notes of violets, liquorice, dark chocolate and subtle spice.
On the palate it is full-bodied and powerful, with dense flavours of black fruits, cocoa and black cherry supported by firm tannins and vibrant acidity. The structure is impressive, giving the wine both depth and precision. The finish is long and persistent, leaving lingering notes of dark fruit, spice and fine tannic grip.
Vintage Overview
The 2003 vintage followed an exceptionally hot summer in the Douro Valley, producing grapes of great concentration and ripeness. The year was widely declared by the major Port houses and is considered one of the finest vintages of the early 21st century. The wines combine remarkable power with excellent ageing potential, and the best examples are expected to continue developing for many decades.
Serving Suggestions
Serve at 16–18°C. Decant for several hours before serving to allow the wine to fully open and to remove natural sediment. It pairs beautifully with blue cheeses such as Stilton, rich chocolate desserts, or strong hard cheeses.
Cellaring
Although already showing impressive depth, Taylor Fladgate 2003 remains a youthful Vintage Port and will continue to evolve for many decades. Properly stored bottles can comfortably cellar until 2050 and beyond.

*** 98 Points Robert Parker ***
When tasting the 2003s for the first time, we kept going back to this wine, as we so often do with Taylor which is surely the most cerebral and complex of all the Vintage Ports. Effortlessly eschewing the excesses of the vintage, 2003 Taylor's Vintage is superb. Dense and inky, with a nose of woodsmoke, cassis, leather and meat, it is richly textured, firmly tannic, with peppery grip and a long, rewarding finish. This is, without doubt, a Vintage Port of the highest quality.

Very subtle nose indeed and to me, someone without unlimited access to vintage ports(!), this seems pretty delicious now. Yes, there is lots of tannin but also lots of very charming pruney fruit. Exciting with sufficient freshness as well as sweetness and interest. Jancis Robinson
