Description

Since being introduced in 1986, Vin de Constance has consistently appeared in lists of the world’s top wines. The 2007 vintage was recently awarded 97 points by Neal Martin of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, making it the best rated South African sweet wine in history.

This vintage was one of the best of the decade, with a long, cool season ensuring concentrated flavours and aromatic intensity. A warm, dry late summer created perfect conditions for the raisining of our Muscat de Frontignan grapes whilst still on the vine.

After handpicking selected shriveled grapes, the berries are left to macerate on their skins for several days to soften, which facilitates the recovery of their golden juice with pressing.

Reviews:
Tasted at The White Club’s dinner in Basel. Even against Denis Dubourdieu’s decadent L’Extravagant 2003, for me, the superlative Vin de Constance 2007 is the better wine. It offers a scintillating bouquet that is beautifully defined with mandarin, wild honey, lavender and Seville orange marmalade vying for attention on the nose. The palate displays more race and better acidity than the Barsac with crystalline honeyed fruits and immense freshness and poise on the finish. Brilliant winemaking here – a South Africa legend that does not disappoint. Tasted September 2012. 97/100 Neal Martin's Wine Journal, erobertparker.com

***97/100, Neal Martin for the Wine Advocate***
Although I have tasted the 2007 Vin de Constance on several occasions, this was the first time professionally. It has an explosive bouquet that sprints out of the blocks with a more effervescent, vivacious personality than the 2008. Citrus lemon, Seville orange marmalade, touches of mandarin and a dash of spice all vie for attention. The aromatics are more Sauternes-like than the 2008. The palate is very well-balanced with a viscous opening, a keen thread of acidity and a bewitching sense of poise and focus. This is probably the finest Vin de Constance to date as it fans out marvellously on the multi-layered finish. This is a startling, world-class wine that gives Yquem a run for its money.
