The 1961 Warre Vintage Port, late bottled in 1965, offers a fascinating glimpse into both vintage character and traditional Port craftsmanship. Warre is one of the oldest and most respected Port houses, founded in 1670, and is known for its elegant, slightly drier house style. This bottling is an interesting piece of history, as it represents an era when some vintage Ports were matured in cask longer before bottling — a practice that gave rise to what we now know as Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Ports.

The 1961 vintage itself was a relatively small harvest, often overshadowed by the legendary 1963, but still capable of producing beautifully refined wines. By bottling in 1965, Warre allowed the wine to spend extra time in wood, developing additional complexity and softening its tannins. As a result, this Port offers a smoother, more approachable profile while still retaining the structure and depth expected of a vintage Port.

On the nose, the 1961 Warre is delicate yet inviting, revealing layers of dried red fruits, figs, toffee, and gentle spice. Hints of cedar, orange peel, and sweet tobacco come forward with time in the glass, reflecting both the maturity of the wine and the influence of prolonged cask aging. The bouquet is beautifully integrated, offering a charming and nostalgic aromatic profile that transports the drinker back in time.

The palate is refined and mellow, with a silky texture and harmonious balance. Flavours of stewed berries, caramel, roasted nuts, and soft spice glide across the tongue, supported by a gentle acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its age. The finish is smooth and elegant, with lingering notes of dried fruit and subtle chocolate. Decanting is recommended to remove any sediment and to allow the wine to express its full aromatic range.

Perfect for those who appreciate mature Ports with softer edges, this wine pairs wonderfully with classic accompaniments. Try it alongside aged blue cheeses, toasted nuts, or rich chocolate desserts. It also shines on its own as a contemplative after-dinner drink. Now fully mature, the 1961 Warre (bottled 1965) is a rare and enchanting find, offering an authentic taste of vintage Port history and a memorable addition to any collector’s table.
