Overall, the 1966 vintage is considered largely very good, if not excellent, for much of the wine world. The year for Port, however, was fantastic and most major houses declared the vintage making it one of the best buys from the year – and it is likely to still be drinking well today. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 59 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Bordeaux: 1966 was a very good wine vintage for Bordeaux. At the time the wines were tannic and had high acidity. Over the past four decades, the tannins have faded to make the wines more drinkable. The best quality wines such as Latour and Palmer are still in their prime even now and will remain so for many years to come. Other Bordeaux wines will remain good to drink.
Italian: 1966 produced a good vintage for Italian wines from Piedmont and Tuscany. Quality Italian reds such as Barolo and Brunello are still drinking well today.
Portugal: Making the perfect wine gift for anniversaries or birthdays, 1966 is an outstanding Port vintage of exceptional quality that was generally declared. Always overshadowed by the legendary 1963, this year is now recognised as being one of the very best post-war Vintage Ports. Gould Campbell, 1966
Vintage Port
The grapes for Gould Campbell Ports are drawn from vineyards in the Cima Corgo area of the Douro, where the yields are very low (about one pipe - 550 litres - per 1,000 vines) but the wines have immense complexity and depth. The winery is situated at Pinhão, where a proportion of the wines are made in modern temperature controlled fermentation tanks, however a significant proportion of the wines for Gould Campbell Ports are still made in small quintas in the hills around Pinhão, using the ancient method of treading the grapes by foot in stone tanks called laggers.

The medium garnet colour has held up quite well with some bricking on the rim, but otherwise this wine is still showing youth and it has the backbone for a long life ahead. Taylors have just announced a limited release of their 1966 Single Harvest Tawny Port. This is a new release of a rich, mellow and spicy 1966 Single Harvest Port.
It is presented in a classic Taylor’s frosted bottle, and packaged in a high quality beech-wood box.
During its five decades of ageing in oak casks, this wine has taken on an attractive pale mahogany colour with olive amber highlights. On the nose the wine displays fine oaky aromas and complex spicy, nutty, cigar box notes against a warm mellow background of butterscotch and molasses. Intense ruby. Elegant, fresh nose, finely balanced, redolent of violets. Palate is remarkably balanced as well: intense fruit (figs) in an excellent mineral/tannic frame. Lovely freshness and the flavours continue on the finish. Still has years of great life ahead.
