1975 Wine and Port Vintage

This Year in History: Fun Facts: The first episode of the popular sitcom Fawlty Towers is broadcast on BBC Two.
Eurovision Winner: Netherlands with the song "Ding-A-Dong" by Teach-In
Born in this Year: David Beckham, Footballer, star midfielder who became the first British soccer player to compete in 100 Champions League matches as well as the first to win league titles in four countries. He led Manchester United to 6 Premier League titles from 1993 to 2003 before continuing his career with Real Madrid and the LA Galaxy. He broke the England national team appearance record for outfield players, and played the final game of his 20-year career on May 18, 2013.
Top Grossing Movie: Jaws

Bordeaux: The summer months were hot and, initially, dry. Despite storms in August, good weather was restored through September and October, permitting the harvest to go on uninfluenced by rain. The wines on release were incredibly tannic yet were intensely fruity and rich. This has mellowed somewhat over 40+ years of cellaring leaving excellent examples of wines that will last well into the future.

Italian: The 1975 is widely regarded as an excellent vintage for Tuscany. The wines are generally big on alcohol, colour, extract and acidity. 1975 is remembered for the extremely hot and dry summer which produced grapes of high concentration, although the harvest in Tuscany was complicated by late rainfall. 1975 was without a doubt the outstanding Brunello vintage of the decade and in the opinion of many producers one of the all time greats. The best wines in Chianti were very good indeed.

Portugal: 1975-vintage-portThe 1975 vintage port declaration came shortly after the 1974 revolution. Under pressure of nationalisation, the port shippers were keen to show what was possible after a run of weak vintages. Whilst the ports are not in the same league as the other 70's declarations like the 1970 or the 1977, they have stood up well and represent a superb quality vs price ratio. Recent tastings have demonstrated that the best are elegant and a pleasure to drink. The wines are now fully mature, with the top producers producing good '75s that will grow old gracefully. They are elegant, fruity and well balanced but not big. A port from 1975 would make an excellent 48 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

Burmester, 1975

Sale

Colheita Port, Douro
Presented in Gift Tube
Special Offer | Was £169 | Now £129

We are delighted to offer a UK exclusive on Burmester Colheita Ports.

This Port wine has a lovely dark caramel colour, with some truffle and tea notes, edges of olive and green fruits (fig). The maturity on the palate is obvious, again with fabulous sweetness and brown sugar richness, Muscovado and walnuts, but the hallmark of the fresh orange and lemon acidity plays against that with the coffee and walnut cake sweetness and richness.

Winemaking:

Hand-picked at the optimum time, the grapes are then destemmed, crushed and converted into wine through a process of careful maceration to extract their colour, tannins and aromas, enhanced by constant churning during fermentation.

Calem Port, 1975

Rewaxed- Remains of label

A port with good maturity without being in any way over-mature. Surprisingly dry in style (compared with a tawny and a colheita ), good fruit, some raisins, quite discreet on the nose, surprisingly light and quite elegant.

Cockburn Port, 1975

Vintage Port

The 1975 Cockburn has a huge nose of chocolate oranges and marmalade but with an interesting twist of rose perfume. Slighltly hollow entry, slow to develop in the mouth but patience rewards with lovely fruit and plenty of bitter orange. A touch of heat on the aftertaste, which settles quickly to a soft and sweet length of red licorice. The PortForum.com

Dalva, 1975

Finest Reserve Tawny Port, DOC Douro

Tawny Port is made from premium blends of wines, sourced from the best vineyards that have been aged for years in oak casks. This art of blending, more than a technique, is steeped in centuries of old traditions passed down from one generation to another, as the “house style” of each Port wine family company.

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine.

Dow's, 1975

Vintage Port
Damaged label

The 1975 Dows Vintage Port is from a vintage that has been long under-rated. I have had repeated tastings of the 75's and whilst not in the same class as the 66 or 70 vintages, nevertheless present an outstanding quality vs price buy. When you consider that recent releases retail around the £80-£90 mark and need 20 years of storage before drinking this represents a bargain. Decanted for 4 hours, the 1975 Dows is fully mature with a nice tawny colour. The recent bottles I have tasted have been very nicely developed and drinking perfectly now. Everything is very well integrated the fruit has mellowed to become a classic vintage port.

Martinez Vintage Port, 1975

Vintage Port

This Port is now beginning to reach its full maturity and is ready for drinking. As it ages further, it will begin to develop gently into a more tawny style Port. This Port should probably be drunk over the next few years although it is still showing remarkable balance and finesse.

Messias, 1975

Quinta Cachao Vintage Port

A very rare bottle of Vintage Port from the good 1975 Vintage - these are the only bottles available in the UK and are a true rarity. Unlike the colheita ports from the same year, this wine has aged in the bottle for nearly 40 years (As opposed to a barrel). It is among the rarest category of ports and is a delight for the port connoisseur.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1975

Vintage Port

"Deeper in colour (as you would expect) but not deep for a Nacional, mid-garnet, thin browning rim; rather odd medicinal aromas, stewed plums; soft, sweet plummy fruit, rather simple and lacking structure with a slightly burnt edge, fuller with some grip on the finish but not really satisfying. I suppose this is not so bad for a 1975 though. Drink now and over the next ten years. 14.5. [Deep colour but already looking quite mature, beautiful liquorice and chocolate aromas, elegant concentration of flavour, firm, milk chocolate finish.]" Richard Mayson.

Rebello Valente Vintage Port, 1975

Vintage Port

Robertson Bros were the shippers behind this brand, which was once one of the most reputable, though, since a fine 1970, very little Vintage Port bears the name.

Drink it alone for dessert. It is like a delicious piece of fruitcake. Medium red, with a roasted, chocolate, earthy nose, medium-bodied, with plenty of tannins and roasted, fruity flavours on the palate.

Taylor's Port, 1975

Vintage Port
Unlabelled - see conditions report

The 1975 vintage is massively underrated, languishing in the shadows of the great 1970 and 1977 vintages. The Ports produced are lighter in style than other declarations but represent tremendous value. The Taylor's 1975 Vintage Port is no exception. Our tastings over the past few years have shown this wine consitently has a good colour in the glass and a mature nose. It has good structure and backbone that is typical of Taylors. It is a touch spirity, with some gentle, stony, red fruits. On the palate there is an immediately apparent sweetness which persists through to the finish.

Reviews "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal.

Kopke, 1975

Colheita Port
In Kopke Presentation Box
***96 Points- GOLD- Decanter 2023***

Attractive amber colour. Rich and perfumed nose dominated by the presence of the dried fruits, harmoniously involved by the spice notes. Smooth and silky in the taste, reveals an amazing structure and a good volume. The elegance describes this delicate whole and is extended in the endless and distinct finish.

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Graham's Port, 1975

Vintage Port
Bin soiled label

*** 93 Points Aggregated Score***

The 1975 Graham's vintage port is a wine from an historic year for Portugal with a port declaration that came shortly after the 1974 revolution. With a lively bright appearance and deep aromatic nose of candied fruit, damson jam and sweet raisins, this port is a crowd pleaser. Elegant, with a long lingering finish it is nearly perfect now and will only keep improving.

Serving Suggestions:
When mature this port will need to be decanted to remove sediment. Serve at room temperature on its own or with vintage mature blue cheeses such as stilton Cashel Blue, Roquefort, Gorgonzola and Saint Augur Blue.
