Overall, the 1977 vintage was far from great. The top reds, fortified and dessert wines from the best regions and producers should still be drinking well but careful research is still advisable. Any of these wines would make a fabulous wine gift for a 49th Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Taylors Port 1977 Vintage Port
  • Palmer Port 1977 Single Harvest Tawny Port

Eurovision Winner: France with the song " L'Oiseau Et L'Enfant" by Marie Myriam

Top Grossing Movie: Star Wars Ep. IV: A New Hope

Bordeaux: Poor weather throughout the growing season in Bordeaux led to a very small crop of thin, light 1977 wines, most of which were drunk within a few years of the vintage. As a result, wines originating from this vintage are rare.

Italian: 1977 was a good vintage for Italian wines. Top regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines - they are now fully mature but will still make good drinking today.

Portugal: The 1977 was a classic vintage, declared by all the major port houses. Even after more than thirty years, the ports are only just becoming approachable and will last for many more decades. The port wines are concentrated, complex, well structured and balanced. Marked by strong tannins, these wines have great finesse and staying power. A 1977 port would make a brilliant wine gift for a birthday, special occasion or anniversary!

    Quarles Harris, 1977

    Vintage Port

    ***18/20, Jancis Robinson***

Healthy ruby with a brick rim. Quite subtle already; there is some perceptible evolution of colour and flavour here. Mineral rather than fruit flavours dominate. Very big and full. Very, very sweet indeed - in fact I thought it was from a Portuguese house. This wine delivers a pretty good combination of power, interest and, especially, sweetness. This is not a wine to be ignored! But it's a very particular style....without enormous tannic reserves. Jancis Robinson

    Warre's Vintage Port, 1977

    Vintage Port

1977 Warres Vintage Port is rich and highly concentrated, it has evolved into to open into a superb Port. Fragrant cassis and prunes nose, fleshy texture, loaded with ripe berry flavours, mellow tannins and a lush fruity finish. Powerful, yet impressively balanced. The 1977s have reached the middle stage of what will prove to be a long and distinguished life. Hugely enjoyable now and it will only get better.

The 1977 Warre Vintage Port was served by Her Majesty the Queen to the Chinese Premier at the State Banquet in 2015.

"This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavourful vintage port.
