He inherited the throne from his father, Alexander II, who was assassinated by an organisation called Narodnaya Volya.Upon taking the throne, Alexander began to undo the liberal reforms which had been enacted over the course of his father's reign. For this he is seen as a staunch reactionary, who believed that an adherence to traditional Russian principles could avert further revolutionary violence.
