1944 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: The 1944 Italian Vintage was overshadowed by the war, however a limited number of bottles were still made. The best examples come from Barolo and the area of Piemonte and these are fine wines that will still be drinking well today.
Bordeaux: The 1944 vintage produced a good standard of Bordeaux wines. France was exceedingly fortunate in the matter of weather during the war. Never, certainly, in the last half century have the French vineyard districts known a comparable succession of dry summers or a higher average of good or creditable vintage years.
Portugal: 1944-vintage-portThe 1944 Port vintage was not declared; no Vintage Port or Single Quinta port was produced in this year. However, some excellent Colheita and Tawny Ports from 1944 were made and we are proud to offer one of the largest collections in the UK. Making the perfect 75 year old wine gifts for a birthday or anniversary, these Colheita ports are true rarities which have been barrel aged until a special bottling commissioned by Vintage Wine and Port. The 1944 Kopke Colheita Port has been selected by the producer as being of the highest quality, and we would recommend it as a truly excellent gift. These colheita ports from the 1944 harvest have already undergone oxidative ageing and as with all tawny port can therefore be savoured over two months after opening.
This Year in History: Fun Fact: Release of Laurence Olivier's Henry V, the first work of Shakespeare filmed in colour.
Born in this Year: Erno Rubik, Architect, Hungarian architect and professor of architecture most notable for inventing the Rubik's cube in 1974. He works in video game development and in 2010 he received The Hungarian Order of Merit Cross of the star. He founded the International Rubik Foundation to support young talented engineers and architects.

Kopke, 1944

Colheita Port, Douro

An outstanding 1944 Single Harvest Colheita port.

This 1944 Port from Kopke, the worlds oldest port house is a true rarity. There are no remaining stocks at Kopke and so these are some of the last bottles for sale.

This port has a bright amber colour with a brown-tawny halo. Elegant nose of dried fruits, well integrated with wood notes. Light and fragrant, with wonderful volume and structure. A wine with great freshness and multi-dimensional flavours. Delicate and persistent finish.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel. This is a contrast to vintage ports which are aged in the bottle and only have a short drinking window after opening.

B Seppelt and Sons, SA, 1 pint and 6 fl oz (650ml)
Sweet Wine

Established in 1851 by Joseph Seppelt, the winery flourished in the 20th century as part of the Seppelt family's expanding interests in the liquor industry, which grew to include vineyards and wineries across various Australian regions. The Seppelts maintained ownership until 1985, when the winery entered a period of corporate ownership which lasted until 2007. Seppeltsfield is now owned by Warren Randall - a qualified viticulturist and winemaker who worked for the Seppelt family during the 1980s. Randall has led a Seppeltsfield renaissance by developing its vineyard holdings on the 'Western Ridge' of the Barossa Valley and restoring the winery's heritage listed buildings, including the prized 1888 Gravity Cellar.
