1954 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: A moderate year for Piedmont.

Bordeaux: One to avoid! 1954 Bordeaux wine is the product of a poor growing season that ended with an equally poor harvest. The 1954 Bordeaux growing season was cool and extremely damp. September got off to a decent start, giving vintners false hope as even September was also consumed by more periods of steady cold and rain. 1954 Bordeaux wine was poor the day it was released and should not be purchased today for drinking.

Portugal: This year was a good vintage that is now very hard to find, and would make a perfect 70 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary. Not a declared year, this Vintage has been fully mature for many years - however if well cellared, the best 1954 port wines will be fine for years to come.

This Year in History: Fun Fact: The first UK Wimpy Bar is opened at the Lyons Corner House in Coventry Street, London.
Born in this Year: John Travolta, Movie Actor, actor who starred in the 1970s hit films Saturday Night Fever and Grease. He later went on to play Vincent Vega in the critically acclaimed 1994 film Pulp Fiction and he also starred in Get Shorty, Ladder 49, Wild Hogs, Hairspray, and Swordfish.

Cantine Antonio Ferrari, 1954

Sale

Il Barone 54 - Solaria nr 5 ***
Special offer | Was £329 | Now £249 ***

"Antonio Ferrari was convinced that the Apulian vines, in particular the Primitivo, needed very long refinement to develop unique and unattainable notes and nuances. This certainty of his, stubbornly defended against everything and everyone, allows us today to savor wines from ancient and excellent vintages, witnesses of pre-modern viticulture."

"Dense creamy, balanced sweet, vital despite its age. Il Barone 54 – Bitter cocoa, coffee, liquorice, less heroic than the other company wines but still surprising."

Harveys Port, 1954

Vintage Port
Unlabelled with embossed capsules

The 1954 Harveys' Vintage port is actually believed to be 1954 Grahams Malvedos. Grahams have indicated that the 1954 Malvedos Vintage was supplied exclusively to Harveys of Bristol in this year who bottled it under their own brand.

Review.
The 1954 still has a deep red colour and density. On the nose there is complex, lovely bouquet of spice, baked cherry, toffee and perhaps a hint of strawberry. Great mouth-feel with weight and density. Great balance between alcohol, tannin, acidity, touch of toffee. A beautiful wine with an ever-lasting finish. 96/100. Outstanding TC VWP tasting. Mar 20.

Spanna, 1954

Antonio Vallana - Travesagna

Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. Tasting notes: The nose opens up beautifully after about an hour and the wine has gorgeous ripe and sweet fruit, nice acidity, and perfectly softened tannins.
