1960 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port: A very good vintage that was declared by all of the major Port houses. The 1960 Ports have now settled into the most glorious old Vintage Ports of the very highest quality. After more than 40 years bottle-ageing, these wines have a superb combination of lovely mature fruit combined with the elegance that only this length of time in bottle can give. They will last for decades to come.

Italian: The 1960 Italian vintage is rated as an average vintage. Heavy-weight, longer lived wines from 1960 such as Barolo and Amarone are still drinking well. They still exhibit a good structure and have deep colour with rich intensity.

Bordeaux: The vintage suffered from two rain filled months of August and September. The wines produced in 1960 were very delicate and light in Bordeaux and only the first growth and Grand Cru wines are now drinkable. The great estates from Sauternes and Barsac produced some good sweet wines in what was a depressed decade for the region.

Calem Port, 1960

Vintage Port UK Grants of St James.

Review from AHB (The Port Forum)
"80% opaque. Muted strawberries on the nose, fruity and attractive. Soft and smooth entry with soft strawberry showing on the palate and gentle tannins lurking under the fruit. The late palate is more fragrant and complex, giving a better level of interest. Fragrant and tasty aftertaste and a delicious finish. ". Tasted 3rd March 2015.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1960

Pauillac

The 1960 chateau Mouton Rothschild was one of the finest wines of the 1960 Bordeaux vintage. The 1960 Mouton label was designed by Jaques Vallon (a power-house of the Cubist Movement) and depicts movement of birds contrasting with the static geometry of vines. Château Mouton Rothschild's 1960 vintage is also something of an increasing rarity, being crafted before this great Bordeaux château was granted first growth status.

Croft Port, 1960

Vintage Port

"Bright tawny with orange flecks, there are whacks of dried fruit and sultanas on the nose, with hints of bitter chocolate and Christmas pudding. The palate is sweet but balanced with a lovely acidity. A fascinating multilayered wine, with the oxidization bringing out maple syrup flavours, coupled with leather and cigar box aromas wrapped around rich dried fruit. Complex, captivating and holding up beautifully." Decanter, Fine Wine Encounter 2009.

The 1960 has a light russet core with deep tawny rim. A lovely soft, mulberry infused nose with a touch of sloes and coca that could do with a tad more delineation.

Ferreira, 1960

Vintage Port

Burnt sienna in colour, 40% opaque. Nutmeg and vanilla all over the very expressive and tertiary nose. Sweet and balanced entry, with some pepperiness on the palate; big flavours of orange and nutmeg. Terrific balance. A huge aftertaste full of golden sultanas, which leads to a very, very long finish of intense seville marmalade. An extremely impressive bottle. 92 points - For The Love of Port

Nobile di Montepulciano, 1960

Cav. Mario Cantucci

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

Offley Vintage Port, 1960

Boa Vista Vintage Port

Quinta Boa Vista (lit Beautiful View Vineyard) hints at the dramatic views enjoyed by one of the most renowned vineyards in the entire Douro valley

Boa Vista is the jewel in the Offley Forrester crown, which is one of the oldest Port Houses (1737) and rose to prominence under Joseph Forrester. He was a legendary figure in the history of port credited with mapping the upper regions of the Douro, only to be drowned in one of its rapids, allegedly weighed down by the weight of gold he had collected from his tenants. Forrester's life was devoted to improving the quality of port and in recognition of his endeavours the King of Portugal made him Baron Forrester.

** 90 Points Wine Spectator **

This wine is now beginning to reach its full maturity and is likely to be ready for drinking. As it ages further, it will begin to develop gently into a more tawny style wine. Intense, structured with a nice soft finish." Almost perfect in its maturity. Still delicious.

"A powerhouse port that has been mellowed and opened up by time. Now in its 43rd year, its tannins have softened to reveal dark fruit flavors, herbaceousness and plenty of grip in the finish." Wine Spetator, 2003.

"Masses of rich plums and prunes on the flavour. So rich – such a surprise.
