Overall, the 1966 vintage is considered largely very good, if not excellent, for much of the wine world. The year for Port, however, was fantastic and most major houses declared the vintage making it one of the best buys from the year – and it is likely to still be drinking well today. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 60 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

Bordeaux: 1966 was a very good wine vintage for Bordeaux. At the time the wines were tannic and had high acidity. Over the past four decades, the tannins have faded to make the wines more drinkable. The best quality wines such as Latour and Palmer are still in their prime even now and will remain so for many years to come. Other Bordeaux wines will remain good to drink.

Italian: 1966 produced a good vintage for Italian wines from Piedmont and Tuscany. Quality Italian reds such as Barolo and Brunello are still drinking well today.

Portugal: Making the perfect wine gift for anniversaries or birthdays, 1966 is an outstanding Port vintage of exceptional quality that was generally declared. Always overshadowed by the legendary 1963, this year is now recognised as being one of the very best post-war Vintage Ports. The wines are characterised by being long lasting with firm, perfect weight and balance. Most will outlast their 1963 counterparts and turn out greater in the long run.

    Chateau Latour, 1966

    Pauillac, 1er Grand Cru Classe

    *** 96 Points Robert Parker ***
    *** 95 Points Wine Journal ***

    Reviews
"The wine of the vintage, the 1966 Latour is a classic, old style Bordeaux that has required decades to become drinkable. A dark, opaque garnet color is followed by a fabulous nose of cedar, sweet leather, black fruits, prunes, and roasted walnuts, refreshing underlying acidity, sweet but noticeable tannin, and a spicy finish. This powerful, vigorous, immensely impressive, concentrated Latour has reached its plateau of maturity, where it will remain for another 10-20 years.

"The Latour ’66 remains one of the great wines of the vintage.

    Chateau Montrose, 1966

    St Estephe 2eme Cru Classe

Reviews: "The 1966 is still dark ruby with a peppery, very spice, yet tight, relatively closed bouquet. The wine is austere and tough on the palate, with good fruit and firm, rough tannins. Comparatively, it is not as massive or as rich as the 1970, 1964, or 1961, but is still backward and austere" PArker Wine Advocate 1996

About Chateau Montrose Château Montrose, an illustrious wine estate located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its exceptional wines and storied history. Classified as a Second Growth in the prestigious Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, Château Montrose has long been celebrated for its commitment to quality and tradition.

The 1966 Château Rauzan-Ségla from Margaux is a distinguished vintage from this historic Second Growth estate, offering a glimpse into Bordeaux's traditional winemaking style. Aromas are often layered and nuanced—dried red berries, cigar box, forest floor, cedar, and subtle floral hints are all possible. On the palate, the wine is refined and soft, with the tannins fully resolved and the acidity lending freshness to a smooth, delicate finish.

    Chateauneuf du Pape, 1966

    Chateau des Fines Roches

    Château des Fines Roches, 1966

    Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The 1966 vintage in the Southern Rhône produced wines of classical structure and steady ripening, shaped by warm Mediterranean conditions and the region’s distinctive galet-strewn vineyards. During this period, Châteauneuf-du-Pape was crafted in a firmly traditional style — Grenache-led blends aged in large old foudres, designed for gradual evolution rather than immediate richness. Château des Fines Roches, overlooking the appellation from its distinctive château, has long been associated with structured, terroir-driven wines capable of extended bottle ageing.

    Cotes de Bourg, 1966

    Chateau Haut Guiraud

    Château Haut Guiraud, 1966

    Côtes de Bourg

The 1966 vintage in Bordeaux produced structured, classically proportioned wines, particularly successful on well-sited Right Bank vineyards where Merlot could achieve full ripeness while retaining freshness. In the Côtes de Bourg, overlooking the Gironde estuary, estates traditionally crafted robust, characterful wines designed for steady development. Château Haut Guiraud reflects this approach, offering a mature expression of mid-1960s Bordeaux shaped by patience in both barrel and bottle.

    Tasting Notes:

    Cotes du Rhone, 1966

    Blaceret Selection Beaujolaise

Côtes du Rhône is a huge appellation in the south of France encompassing 40,300 ha. Plenty of white and rosé wine is produced in Côtes du Rhône but there can be no doubt that red is king. Usually Grenache will dominate the blend (except in the north where Syrah is allowed to be top dog, but these wines are relatively few) and is normally partnered with Syrah and/or Mourvèdre but a further 18 varieties are also permitted! A cheerful example might be light, soft, fruity and easy-drinking, while the finest examples may be full-bodied, concentrated, intense, spicy and ageworthy. But what they all invariably have in common is a fabulous sense of place and lashings of personality and character.

    Leacock, 1966

    Bual

John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. During his apprenticeship he had been in constant contact with an old school friend, John Patient, residing at that time in Charles Town, South Carolina who suggested that they themselves should commence trading. Leacock agreed and this marks the birth of the now world famous company. Bottled in 1994 after 28 years in cask, this totally unique vintage Madeira is sweet, though markedly less so than Malmsey Madeira.
