Overall, the 1977 vintage was far from great. The top reds, fortified and dessert wines from the best regions and producers should still be drinking well but careful research is still advisable. Any of these wines would make a fabulous wine gift for a 49th Anniversary or birthday.

Bordeaux: Poor weather throughout the growing season in Bordeaux led to a very small crop of thin, light 1977 wines, most of which were drunk within a few years of the vintage. As a result, wines originating from this vintage are rare.

Italian: 1977 was a good vintage for Italian wines. Top regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines - they are now fully mature but will still make good drinking today.

Portugal: The 1977 was a classic vintage, declared by all the major port houses. Even after more than thirty years, the ports are only just becoming approachable and will last for many more decades. The port wines are concentrated, complex, well structured and balanced. Marked by strong tannins, these wines have great finesse and staying power. A 1977 port would make a brilliant wine gift for a birthday, special occasion or anniversary!

    Quarles Harris, 1977

    Vintage Port

    ***18/20, Jancis Robinson***

Healthy ruby with a brick rim. Quite subtle already; there is some perceptible evolution of colour and flavour here. Mineral rather than fruit flavours dominate. Very big and full. Very, very sweet indeed - in fact I thought it was from a Portuguese house. This wine delivers a pretty good combination of power, interest and, especially, sweetness. This is not a wine to be ignored! But it's a very particular style....without enormous tannic reserves. Jancis Robinson

    Rosso Colline Luchesi, 1977

    Alberto Bertolli

The 1977 Rosso Colline Lucchesi from Alberto Bertolli is a rare and fascinating example of mature Tuscan winemaking, offering a glimpse into the style and character of a wine that has quietly aged for nearly five decades. Produced in the hills surrounding Lucca—an area known for its charming, traditional blends of Sangiovese and local varietals—this bottle represents both regional heritage and the dedication of a small-scale, artisanal producer. The 1977 vintage in Tuscany was warm and generous, producing wines with richness, depth, and the capacity for graceful ageing.

In the glass, this mature red reveals a brick-garnet core fading to a tawny rim, a visual hallmark of long bottle ageing.

    Royal Oporto, 1977

    Quinta do Corval Vintage Port

This fine 1977 vintage port has a pale red color with a huge rim. It has a lovely balanced and elegant floral nose, with very little red berry fruit remaining. The palate is well structured and in balance, with malt and some background coffee. Probably at its best now, will hold.

    Royal Oporto, 1977

    Real Companhia Velha Vintage Port

    Royal Oporto 1977 Vintage Port

The 1977 vintage stands among the great declared years of the modern era, and Royal Oporto’s expression offers both maturity and classic structure.

Now fully evolved, the wine presents a deep garnet colour shading gently towards brick at the rim. The nose is layered and inviting, with aromas of black cherry, dried plum and fig, complemented by notes of dark chocolate, leather, cedar and sweet spice.

On the palate, it shows impressive harmony. The once firm tannins have softened into a smooth, rounded texture, yet there remains a reassuring backbone that gives the wine shape and persistence.

    Smith Woodhouse, 1977

    Vintage Port

1977 Smith Woodhouse – Vintage Port

A great year and a quietly classic house: the ’77 Smith Woodhouse is now at a glorious, mature plateau. Deep garnet shading to tawny at the rim; the nose is layered and refined—black cherry liqueur, fig and date, sweet orange peel, cacao and coffee bean, with violet, cedar and a touch of eucalyptus. The palate is silken and beautifully knit: sweet blackberry and kirsch glide over lively acidity and velvety, resolved tannins; notes of walnut, dark chocolate and baking spice lead to a long, graceful finish with candied citrus and cocoa.

Producer note: Smith Woodhouse (part of the Fladgate partnership) is known for concentrated,

    Taylor Fladgate, 1977

    Vintage Port- MAGNUM

Robert Parker writes.... "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1977 has consistently been at the top of my list of vintage ports in this great vintage, although the Dow, Graham, and Fonseca are equally splendid. It is a mammoth, opaque, statuesque vintage port of remarkable depth and power.

    Blandys, 1977

    Terrantez Vintage Madeira
    97 Points - Wine Spectator
    37.5cl Half Bottle
PLEASE ALLOW 10 DAYS FOR DELIVERY

Blandy's, a family-run winery since 1811, is renowned for its dedication to Madeira wine traditions. The Terrantez 1977 was aged for 38 years in seasoned American oak casks using the traditional canteiro method, beginning in the warm attic floors of their Funchal lodge and gradually moving to cooler levels over time. This careful ageing process has resulted in a wine of remarkable complexity and elegance.

    Tasting Notes:
This distinguished 1977 vintage from Blandy’s presents a vibrant bouquet of dried citrus, roasted peach, tropical fruits, marzipan, and flan. Subtle smoky nuances, reminiscent of peat, intertwine with truffle and forest floor elements, leading to an exceptionally fresh and pure finish.

    Taylor Fladgate, 1977

    Vintage Port

The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is an incredible wine from an outstanding vintage. Great plum red, vibrant. Fresh nose, clean fruit with delicate floral notes. A wine with great complexity of fruit – berry and spice, dense, luscious and concentrated, yet with a soft, delicate finish which belies the inner strength.

    Reviews:
