Overall, 2015 was a blinder of a vintage, especially for the classics. There are plenty of options for both drinking now or for cellaring later, so take your pick. Europe had an intensely hot summer and many regions were affected by drought, but luck seemed to be mostly on the growers’ side as the majority pulled through, delivering stunning wines. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 10 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The first-generation Apple Watch was released.
Eurovision Winner: Sweden with the song "Heroes" by Mans Zelmerlow.
Top Grossing Movie: Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens
Italian: In Piemonte an exceptional vintage was produced, with great promise thanks to healthy grapes and exceptionally regular bunches. In Tuscany, a cold and rainy winter preceded an irregular spring followed by exceptionally hot, dry summer weather, creating small bunches of Sangiovese, so yields were down across the region however concentration levels concentration levels are very good.
Portugal: Abundant rainfall marked the start of the viticultural year, replenishing depleted soil water reserves. This was to prove crucial due to the very dry winter, spring and summer that followed which was the hottest and driest of the last 36 years. It was the hottest June of the last half-century resulting in exceptionally low yields at harvest time. The conditions leading up to the harvest were excellent and a little late rain followed by sunshine just before picking offset some of the heat stress to produce some of the best grapes in memory (particularly Touriga Franca). The vintage was exceptional but held back from declaration.

Quinta de Roeda Vintage Port 6 Litre bottle Please Allow 7 Days For Delivery
This 2015 Vintage Port Wine is a very rare Imperial (6L) This vintage port features an intense purple-black centre surrounded by a vivid magenta rim. Warm notes of liquorice, dark chocolate and spice contribute to the wine’s opulent character. The palate is smooth, round and full of rich, jammy flavour. Gigi Rosso, 2015
Barolo - Rocche Moriondino ***92 points- James Suckling*** ***89 Points- Wine Enthusiast***
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.
Gigi Rosso winery sits in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Barolo land. It carries the name of its founder Gigi, one of Barolo’s and Langhe pioneers. …

Acquired in 1890, this property is acknowledged to be in one of the Upper Douro Valley’s most favourable sites. It has been the source of some of the greatest Vintage Ports ever made. The Stone Terraces vineyard at Quinta dos Malvedos produced an extraordinary wine in 2015. The grapes were picked by hand over the weekend of the 12th/13th of September, a couple of days before substantial rain fell across the Douro Valley, and were subsequently fermented in lagares at the estate’s own small winery. …

Massolino, Barolo Piedmont Riserva Vigna Rionda ***98 - Wine Enthusiast***
The most prominent element in the history of our estate, Vigna Rionda is one of the most sought-after and prestigious crus in the area. This prestige goes beyond the microclimate and soil: something happens on that hill and that something gives life to Vigna Rionda Riserva, a truly unique wine.
Made with Nebbiolo grapes grown in our vineyard in the “Vigna Rionda” Me.G.A. in Serralunga d’Alba.
The bouquet reveals multiple broad and enveloping sensations, ranging from those of the early years, focused primarily on red fruits and flowers, to the more evolved sensations of brushwood, tobacco and spices that develop with age. …

BIOMA Vinha Velha, Douro MAGNUM ** 95 Points- Wine Advocate ** ***19/20 Points-(JH) Jancis Robinson.com***
This 2015 Bioma “Vinha Velha”, Vintage Port Wine from Niepoort is a single vineyard Vintage Port from aged vines at Vinha da Pisca (mostly + 80 years old), which is cultivated organically. A hot site, which produces impressive tannins, it formed the backbone of Niepoort Vintage Ports for many years. However, the best parcels were set aside for this wine in 2013, 2011, 2009, 2008 and (known then as Pisca) in 2007. Like Niepoort Vintage Port, Bioma was 100% foot trodden with 100% stems. It was then aged in pipes (550 litre)and will be bottled in the third year after the harvest (2018) which, says Niepoort, is what happened in the “old days” when wines were shipped to England in pipes, and bottled later. …

Hans Erich Dausch, Weine Pinot Noir
From the vineyard of Hans Erich Dausch (better known simply as “HE”), in the Pfalz region of Germany, the 2015 HE Weine Pinot Noir delivers a fine example of what this boutique house does so well. With vines planted on steep slopes at 200-230 m altitude and careful selection of fruit from old-vines, this wine reflects both place and craft. It’s crafted for elegance, not brute power.
In the glass it shows a deep, luminous ruby with subtle garnet glints at the rim. On the nose you’ll discover raspberry, cherry and wild strawberry, layered with a perfume of violet, fine spice and a hint of undergrowth. …

As is well known, a Quinta do Noval declaration cannot be categorised according to the traditional distinction between a full declaration and a single quinta declaration, for the simple reason that all our greatest wines are wines from a single quinta, the great vineyard of Quinta do Noval. Whenever we decide to declare a Quinta do Noval Vintage Port, we are clearly saying that this is a great wine that deserves to bear the Quinta do Noval label.
