The 2016 vintage was mostly excellent. Highlights mainly lie in the classic regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Barolo and Tuscany. Port is also a no-brainer, although with this level of quality, expect prices to be high.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: Andrew Lawrence became the fastest runner to complete a marathon dressed as a fruit.
Eurovision Winner: won by Ukraine with the song "1944" by Jamala
Top Grossing Movie: Captain America Civil War
Bordeaux: The 2016 Bordeaux vintage is widely regarded as excellent and age-worthy. A warm, dry summer followed a cool, wet spring, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness. Reds are structured, elegant, and concentrated, whites are crisp and aromatic, and sweet wines are rich and balanced. Overall, 2016 Bordeaux wines are powerful yet refined, ideal for ageing.
Douro Wines: The 2016 Douro vintage produced excellent, high-quality wines. Hot, dry conditions in summer and cooler nights helped preserve freshness, giving reds deep fruit, firm tannins, and strong structure, and whites aromatic and lively character. Overall, 2016 Douro wines are age-worthy and balanced, ideal for both drinking now and cellaring.
Italian: The 2016 Italian vintage is considered one of the best in recent years. Excellent weather and careful vineyard management produced ripe, structured reds with silky tannins and vibrant, expressive whites. Italian wines from 2016 are balanced, elegant, and long-lived, making them a favorite for collectors and wine lovers alike.
Portugal: The 2016 vintage port declaration came as no surprise given that the excellent 2015 vintage was passed over in favour of this vintage. The 2016 declaration is the first since the outstanding 2011 vintage and will inevitably draw comparisons.
All of the major shippers declared the 2016. The yield is tiny as a cold and wet spring made for a tough start to the year. The very hot weather that followed hampered the ripening process as the vines shut down. The picking season was dry which meant that winemakers could pick the grapes at the optimum ripeness. Production release volumes are very small, for instance only 72 cases were released of the Nacional!
The ports although approachable in their youth, will be at their optimum between 2025 and 2060+.
