It could be argued that 2017 was the year when natural disaster reigned supreme and climate change well and truly reared its ugly head. However, there are good wines to be had – particularly when it came to the sweet wines of Sauternes and Tokaji, the whites of Alsace, Germany and Austria, and the fortified wines of Port.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The world’s largest dinosaur footprint was discovered. The 5.5 foot (1.7 meter) dinosaur footprint was discovered in Kimberley, Western Australia.
Eurovision Winner: Portugal with the song "Amar Pelos Dois" by Salvador Sobrai.
Top Grossing Movie: Star Wars Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi
Bordeaux: The 2017 Bordeaux vintage was challenging but rewarding in the best vineyards. A wet spring caused uneven flowering, followed by a warm summer that brought good ripeness. Reds are elegant, structured, and fresh, with moderate yields giving concentration. Whites are crisp and aromatic. Overall, 2017 Bordeaux wines are balanced and approachable, with good ageing potential.
Douro Wines: The 2017 Douro vintage was warm but uneven, leading to smaller berries and concentrated wines in the best vineyards. Reds are juicy, structured, and aromatic, while whites show freshness and elegance. Overall, 2017 Douro wines are enjoyable now and have moderate ageing potential.
Italian: The 2017 Italian vintage is classic and harmonious. Cool spring and summer in many regions led to moderate yields and fresh, aromatic grapes. Reds are refined and balanced, with smooth tannins, while whites are bright and lively. 2017 Italian wines are elegant and versatile, suitable for both early drinking and ageing.
Portugal: We are pleased to announce that the major port houses have declared the 2017 Port Vintage. Extremely rare, this is the Symington family's first ever consecutive declaration and follows the acclaimed 2016 Vintage. This is a milestone moment in port history and is the result of two very different but extremely high-quality years for port in the Douro.

Tasting notes
Opaque black at the centre with a narrow purple rim. Uncompromisingly Taylor’s in style, elegant and precise. The nose is threaded with very fine, linear fruit, heady and complex but restrained by a graphite minerality. Quinta da Vargellas has imprinted its signature fragrance of violets, which hangs like a scented veil over the wine, and there are discreet terroir notes of citrus, wild herbs and gumcistus. …

Vietti - Ravera, Piedmont ***16.5/20 JancisRobinson.com***
Located in the heart of the Langhe hills, at the top of the village of Castiglione Falletto, the Vietti wine cellar was founded in the late 1800s by Carlo Vietti. The estate has gradually grown over the course of time, and today the vineyards include some of the most highly-prized terroirs within the Barolo winegrowing area.
Designation: Barolo D.O.C.G.
Grapes: 100% Nebbiolo
Winemaking: The grapes are selected from the single vineyard Ravera in Novello, planted with roughly 4,500 units per hectare. The vines have an average age of 28 years with the oldest part planted in 1935. The roughly 3-hectare vineyard is a wonderful hill with a south-western exposure and a clay-limestone soil. …

Grape Variety: Nebbiolo, 100%
The grapes come from the historic MGA “Brunate” vineyard in the municipality of La Morra, located on the southern slope towards Barolo. Bourgogne, 2017
Grand Vin de Borgogne, Burgundy Florent Garaudet Monthelie Vieilles Vignes ***93 Points VertdeVin***
This is a complex red made from Pinot Noir, with powerful, forward black cherry aromatics, exotic spice, and hints of earth. Florent’s use of 400-liter barrels for aging adds dimensional texture without overpowering the nose or palate. On the palate, this rare wine evokes the silkiness of Volnay and the power of Pommard.
About this wine producer: Like Raphaël Bérêche, Florent Garaudet is a self-confident, socially intelligent visionary, who, at the age of twenty-three was impatient to strike out on his own. So instead of coming to work alongside his father, Paul Garaudet, on the estate that has been in the family for five generations, …

Tasting note
Warre’s 2017 has bright floral aromas of roses and violets, typical of the Touriga Nacional and also of rockrose, which is a feature of the Touriga Franca. On the palate the wine is full and plummy with amazing concentration and buoyant freshness delivering flavours of black cherries and blackberries. Layers of complexity are gradually revealed with a remarkable full-bodied structure. …
