It could be argued that 2017 was the year when natural disaster reigned supreme and climate change well and truly reared its ugly head. However, there are good wines to be had – particularly when it came to the sweet wines of Sauternes and Tokaji, the whites of Alsace, Germany and Austria, and the fortified wines of Port.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The world’s largest dinosaur footprint was discovered. The 5.5 foot (1.7 meter) dinosaur footprint was discovered in Kimberley, Western Australia.
Eurovision Winner: Portugal with the song "Amar Pelos Dois" by Salvador Sobrai.
Top Grossing Movie: Star Wars Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi
Bordeaux: The 2017 Bordeaux vintage was challenging but rewarding in the best vineyards. A wet spring caused uneven flowering, followed by a warm summer that brought good ripeness. Reds are elegant, structured, and fresh, with moderate yields giving concentration. Whites are crisp and aromatic. Overall, 2017 Bordeaux wines are balanced and approachable, with good ageing potential.
Douro Wines: The 2017 Douro vintage was warm but uneven, leading to smaller berries and concentrated wines in the best vineyards. Reds are juicy, structured, and aromatic, while whites show freshness and elegance. Overall, 2017 Douro wines are enjoyable now and have moderate ageing potential.
Italian: The 2017 Italian vintage is classic and harmonious. Cool spring and summer in many regions led to moderate yields and fresh, aromatic grapes. Reds are refined and balanced, with smooth tannins, while whites are bright and lively. 2017 Italian wines are elegant and versatile, suitable for both early drinking and ageing.
Portugal: We are pleased to announce that the major port houses have declared the 2017 Port Vintage. Extremely rare, this is the Symington family's first ever consecutive declaration and follows the acclaimed 2016 Vintage. This is a milestone moment in port history and is the result of two very different but extremely high-quality years for port in the Douro.

Tasting notes
Opaque black at the centre with a narrow purple rim. Uncompromisingly Taylor’s in style, elegant and precise. The nose is threaded with very fine, linear fruit, heady and complex but restrained by a graphite minerality. Quinta da Vargellas has imprinted its signature fragrance of violets, which hangs like a scented veil over the wine, and there are discreet terroir notes of citrus, wild herbs and gumcistus. …

Dow's, 2017
Vintage Port
Magnum Bottle (150cl)
98/100 - James Suckling
Tasting notes
It is rare to see such tremendous depth and intensity in colour as this wine displays The freshness of the floral aromas is very attractive with a dominance of rockrose, a flower that grows wild around the hills of Senhora da Ribeira. On the palate, it is exceptionally full-bodied, rich and powerful with black fruit coming to the fore. Gorgeous, ripe fruit is balanced by the fine tannin structure. On the finish, it is typically Dow, austere and somewhat drier than many other ports. The intense fruit flavours linger long on the palate.
Charles Symington commented after selecting the final blend:
“This is one of the finest Dow’s Vintage Ports I have blended. …

Fonseca Port, 2017
Vintage Port, DOC Douro
*** 17.5/20 - Jancis ***
*** 95/100 - Vinous ***
*** 18/20 - Mayson ***
Tasting Note
A narrow magenta ring around a core of inky purple black. The nose opens with a burst of dark, woodland fruit, dense and succulent, blended with fresher, more vibrant red berry aromas. A slatey minerality holds this exuberant fruitiness in check. At this stage, the nose is still reserved and discreetly aromatic, revealing leafy, balsamic scents and cedary notes of sawn wood. The first impression on the palate, as on the nose, is of tightly packed, dense dark berry fruit, which then explodes on the mid-palate and surges into the long finish. The texture is round and velvety but the taut, sinewy tannins and a strand of crisp acidity provide firmness and structure. …
