It is generally too early to be definitive about the 2019 vintage, however, due to the hot summer – it was the second-hottest year on record, globally – there are likely to be some brilliant wines.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: – FIFA Women's World Cup: The most-watched British television broadcast of the year, 11.7 million viewers watch the England football team's 1–2 defeat to USA in the semi-final in Parc Olympique Lyonnais (Stade de Lyon) in Lyon, France.

Top Grossing Movie: Avengers: Endgame
Bordeaux: The 2019 Bordeaux vintage is widely regarded as an excellent year, producing wines that are rich, elegant and beautifully balanced. A warm, sunny summer followed by cooler nights allowed grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness, giving reds deep colour, ripe tannins and vibrant fruit. Dry white wines are aromatic and crisp, while sweet wines from Sauternes show impressive concentration despite smaller yields. Overall, 2019 offers approachable wines in their youth with strong ageing potential, making it a great choice for both drinking now and cellaring for the future.
Douro Wines: The 2019 Douro vintage produced very good quality wines with impressive concentration and freshness. A hot, dry summer led to smaller berries and lower yields, while cooler nights before harvest helped maintain natural acidity and aromatic lift. The resulting red wines show rich dark fruit, firm but refined tannins and excellent structure, balanced by freshness rather than heaviness. Whites from the region are bright and expressive. Overall, 2019 Douro wines are powerful yet balanced, offering both early enjoyment and strong ageing potential.
Italian: The 2019 Italian vintage is considered a very strong and classic year across many key regions. A generally warm growing season with cooler nights allowed grapes to ripen steadily while keeping good natural acidity. The result is wines with vibrant fruit, fresh balance and refined structure. In regions such as Piedmont and Tuscany, reds show excellent ageing potential with elegant tannins, while many whites are aromatic and lively. Overall, 2019 Italy offers quality, balance and great drinkability, making it a dependable choice for both collectors and everyday enjoyment.
Portugal: The 2019 Port vintage in Portugal is considered a very good, classically styled year, though not universally declared by all major houses. A hot, dry summer reduced yields but produced small, concentrated grapes, while cooler conditions at harvest helped preserve freshness and aromatics. The resulting Vintage Ports show deep colour, intense dark-fruit character, firm yet polished tannins and vibrant acidity, giving both immediate appeal and the structure for long ageing. Overall, 2019 offers balanced, expressive Ports with excellent cellaring potential for those seeking quality without the rarity of a fully declared vintage.
