Dense inky core fading to a magenta rim. A seductive Croft nose, ripe and voluptuous but with the depth and density characteristic of the 2017 vintage. As usual, plump, juicy blackcurrant, black cherry and raspberry form the backdrop. However, the nose is soon drawn into a vortex of heady, complex aroma in which resiny scents of eucalyptus and gumcistus blend with pungent notes of sage and mint, fresh hints of grapefruit and a mellow spiciness. On the palate, firm, sinewy tannins are wrapped in a thick envelope of dense, velvety texture. As is often the case, this is one of the most exotic and beguiling wines of the vintage. …

Dow's, 2017
Vintage Port
Half Bottle (37.5cl)
Dow’s, 2017 Vintage Port
The 2017 vintage stands among the most remarkable Port declarations of recent decades. Following a dry winter and an exceptionally hot summer in the Douro Valley, the harvest arrived earlier than usual, producing small, intensely concentrated grapes. Despite the heat, the finest vineyards retained excellent freshness, resulting in wines of great power, purity and balance.
Dow’s 2017 Vintage Port is a superb expression of the house’s distinctive style — structured, elegant and slightly drier than many of its counterparts. The nose reveals deep aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and dark plum, complemented by hints of violet, cocoa and subtle spice. …

Dow's, 2017
Vintage Port
Magnum Bottle (150cl)
98/100 - James Suckling
Tasting notes
It is rare to see such tremendous depth and intensity in colour as this wine displays The freshness of the floral aromas is very attractive with a dominance of rockrose, a flower that grows wild around the hills of Senhora da Ribeira. On the palate, it is exceptionally full-bodied, rich and powerful with black fruit coming to the fore. Gorgeous, ripe fruit is balanced by the fine tannin structure. On the finish, it is typically Dow, austere and somewhat drier than many other ports. The intense fruit flavours linger long on the palate.
Charles Symington commented after selecting the final blend:
“This is one of the finest Dow’s Vintage Ports I have blended. …

A narrow magenta ring around a core of inky purple black. The nose opens with a burst of dark, woodland fruit, dense and succulent, blended with fresher, more vibrant red berry aromas. A slatey minerality holds this exuberant fruitiness in check. At this stage, the nose is still reserved and discreetly aromatic, revealing leafy, balsamic scents and cedary notes of sawn wood. The first impression on the palate, as on the nose, is of tightly packed, dense dark berry fruit, which then explodes on the mid-palate and surges into the long finish. …

The wine is a truly outstanding example of the best that the Douro is capable of producing. Deep purple in colour and with a viscosity that signals a huge concentration, the aromas of blackberry, plum and bergamot leap out of the glass. Quinta de la Rosa, 2017
Vintage Port
Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.
The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.
It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. From the river's edge to the top, one passes through 11 different microclimates. This gives La Rosa great flexibility to add variety and complexity to its Ports. …

Christian Seely (MD Noval) believes the 2017s "to be exceptional":
“I consider these wines to be among the best that I have known during my time at Quinta do Noval. The decision to declare them was a very easy one. As is well known, at Quinta do Noval, we do not hesitate to make small declarations of our Vintage Ports even in years which are not being generally declared, provided that the quality is excellent. But the 2017 is clearly an exceptional year which I believe will be remembered as one of the historic Vintage Port declarations of Quinta do Noval. …
